a yard being right next to a busy motorway and field backing onto motorway. My horse has jumped out of a field previously but there were other issues. I dont think he do it just to get away from other horses.

Wouldn't be my favorite place to be, but if the fencing is really strong and sturdy should be ok. I would want electric tape running on the inside of the fence line to be honest.

Brilliant for traffic proofing though.

I kept horses right by a motorway once, it was fine, had double layer of fencing.
Backed a 3yo in a paddock right by the M3, it made him traffic proof ;)

I kept mine next to a motorway and a paper lorry came off and ploughed in to the fencing. There was paper everywhere  and of course the fence was down but luckily the horses were in the next field that night.

we are close to the m3! one field is right next to it, but about 30 foot up and has good fencing and hedges in the way, you can hear the cars but cant see them!

the other fields are a bit further away! but if the horses jumped out of the summer field they would be into another field of crops that is next to the motorway but i've never worried that they'd go over to the motorway!

My horse is in a field next to a main road. She is a pain about electric fencing with a track or strip grazing but good about boundary fencing where the grass isn't greener on the other side.

I don't double fence and I check my fencing every day. If my field was alongside a motorway I would probably double fence.

i would be a tad weary if it is not double fenced, ie post and rail and then electric, however it will be great traffic proofing! and worse case scenario horses would be unlikely to venture into the oncoming traffic. Most have more sense with lorries etc...

I keep my 3 next to the M5 - their field is up on an embankment section so they are above it. The pot and rail fence between the field and the motorway is sound and they're kept behind electric fence to keep them off the field track so it's essentially double fenced. Never had a problem. The field slopes downhill to the gateway to the access track so we have to ride along here to get out. It's at the same height as the road and it's brilliant for traffic proofing etc. Never had a spook or fright from the traffic.

It's not perfect but it's not a problem.

yes, I know of a few issues being next to a motorway has caused at 2 different yards local to me! One being liver damage as they re-did a stretch of the motorway and toxins got into the soil that the horses graze on from the work. One of the horses is now on my yard and thankfully okay with a lower liver function and on supplements but a few did sadly die. I wouldn't risk it TBH.

I do a lot of motorway driving, and always think that they are really well fenced. There are a much bigger percentage of animals being injured on other roads than there are motorways.

I would be more bothered about the noise. I to a show next to the M62 once and it was so loud all day!

I think I know which show you mean and where it was :)

Some of the yard fields back onto the M25 and have no problems with this at all. As long as the fencing is good it is a great way to traffic proof. My boy came from Wales and spooked at anything bigger than a small car when I first got him, now he is great in traffic and I put that down to watching the M25. The horses have been out there for years and never a problem with them getting out or fumes etc.
