I went down to sort my horse out last night (a couple of hours later than usual), one of the girls had brought him in for me so when I switched the light on, there he was.

He seemed to blink a few times and almost wake up, and was then VERY cuddly- hes not usually the most affectionate, occasionally he'll groom you back for a moment or two but nothing more than that.

Then he just seemed to yawn and yawn and yawn! He had his teeth done a fortnight ago, and no real issues- just a sharp edge that was rasped down. I mention this as he also seemed to want to chew everything.

Is yawning normal wake up behaviour? (I have to confess and say that I very rarely see him wake up- he lives on a farm and is up with chickens before I arrive!).

I did wonder about colic but offered him a clean drink, and then he ate some hay. YO did a late night check (11.30pm) and he was fine then.

I started yawning reading this. It's funny how the mere word yawn can have you yawn!!

As to the horse, you probably just woke him up gently. A sharp spooky waking up will make them have adrenaline but a nice gentle waking will just make them still feel sleepy lol my horses all yawn a fair bit when they naturally wake up after a snooze in the sun.

Our horse was very ill recently and I mentioned to the vet that he was yawning a lot which was unusual for him. She said it was possibly a colic sign but in our case wasn't.
I guess it wasn't in yours either but apparently it's a known thing (not known by me 😉)

Ah okay!

I did wonder about colic, as he was so cuddly, but there were no other signs and there was fresh poo so I wasn't too worried.

I think that must be it Equi, I don't often see him asleep- he's quite a worrier so is often the one left to guard the others and I'm always up after he wakes up.

I did the very same with my gelding a few years ago and he yawned in the same way. Blinking and biig yawns. he had been dozing off standing up after eating all his hay. I'd never seen it before either, but it was super cute. YO checked on him again a few hours later after I mentioned it, and said he was fine.

keep an eye on him and see if he does it during the day, you probably just woke him up like others mentioned.

I went to get mine in the other morning and both of them were standing together yawning their heads off.

I'd also heard it was a pain response, so was a bit worried but they came in and guzzled breakfast as normal. They were both hungry so I wondered whether it was hunger pain.
