Yay 1st shoot on Saturday!

Not being invited back on my ex's shoot, I was starting to think we wouldn't get out this season

But, thanks to my boss and his wife, I have been asked to beat on 2 shoots now and have confirmed dates until Feb!

Now, have been practising loads on recall and that's been going really well most of the time but, when in a shoot situation with lots of birds being put up at once, I really think Hector will lose his head and his hearing!

So my main concern is in maize, it's about 6ft tall and I know if he gets too far ahead of me he'll get disorientated and he'll have got away from me. I don't want to get a *******ing, so would you recommend a long line?

It means he won't be able to get into as much as he noramally would and i'll struggle to weave about with him but does anyone else use these on a shoot or will I complicate things?

Aw thanks for asking slinky, my little man came home on friday night with his thorn in a test tube - it's bigger than I thought it would be. He's on 12 eye drops per day and pain killers but back to his naughty self!

We're back there again at 4pm for a check up so fingers crossed they're happy so far.

Funnily enough there was no mention of payment this time - hmmm i'm saying nothing!

Otto goes out on a long line, we don't go through Maize, but we do go through 10ft cover crops! It is bloody awkward, but we muddle through.

Hi Moliichop! We're off shooting on Saturday too. This will be Purdey's second outing but she will stay on a long line (well actually 2 slip leads linked together!).
It is awkward going through woods with a long line so I can imagine it will be pretty awkward through maize! I suggest keeping the long line fairly short through the maize and following the dog - that way you shouldn't get too wrapped round the maize. Better than getting a b*ll*cking for going too far ahead of the beating line!
