A couple of weeks ago I posted about my Pajero that I had given up on and bought a Discovery instead. I really don't like towing with the Discovery (trailer starts to 'swing' at around 45 mph on dual carriageways). I sold my Pajero to a mechanic friend who has since replaced the cylinder head - apparently the thermostat was broken, there was a leak in a hose so it ran out of water and as the thermostat was broken, didn't warn me until it was too late and the head cracked.

I have come to an arrangement with my mechanic friend about getting the Pajero back, and I will either swap the Discovery with him, or sell it privately and give him the cash.

I can't wait, the Discovery is great to drive around without the trailer and is more economical, but the reason for having a 4x4 is to tow and I am not happy at the moment.

Sorry, just really pleased to be getting my lovely truck back!

good for you

I know, that is the only problem - being automatic, heavier and a slightly bigger engine than the Disco, it is more expensive to run, but after trying the Disco towing 4 times now, I think the change is worth it - I;ve done 400 towing miles in the Disco, so it isn't like I haven't tried!!

I want rid of mine as there is not enough boot space for the pushchair i need a family car so if anyone wants mine your welcome to it.

I would back you 100% on the Pajero (do you know that it means wanker in spanish) Its a proper robust towing vehicle and what I would consider a proper off roader

they are fabby for off road and towing but so not convinient when you have a young baby like me the 3 doors and tiny boot are just a nightmare.

i will be sad to see it go as we really like it but i just need soemthing more convinient when we go shopping we have to put james in the front and i have to sit in the back one seat down with a pile of food on me.

Mine is a LWB, so plenty of space - the Disco is much smaller - can only just fit the dog cage in the boot, with no space for anything else!

ours is SWB so very cramped did us proud though when it was us two the dog and the tack.

Oh me me me!!

Actually I have been looking at the SWB Pajeros for a while (only got as far as looking on line as all the ones for sale seem to be miles from me) as i want one for occasional towing, 1 horse. Can I ask a couple of questions?

What's the fuel economy like? Obviously with the cost of Diesel/petrol at the moment I doubt I could use it as an every day car what to you rekon you get MPG from it? Also is insurance hard to get as it's an import vehicle? Are they generally reliable? Assume most are Diesel as as far as i can see the petrol ones are the 3.5ltr ones, also assume manual better than automatic for towing? Thought I would prob just tax it for 6 months to allow me to do things during the summer. Suppose if I needed for an emergency I would be stuck outside the summer months, like most on a very tight budget so trying to think of ways to keep costs down yet get some sort of transport?
Thanks!

Hi there, replied earlier, but then laptop crashed!!

My Disco is manual, my Paj automatic - I much prefer towing with the auto, easier all round really, you don't have to worry about changing gear! It also gives a smoother ride for the horses I think. It does make it more spendy on diesel, I get around 23 mpg, more with the Disco, probably nearer 30mpg, although I haven't had the Disco long so bit difficult to tell.

Insurance hasn't been a problem, although to get theft insurance I had to provide evidence that it had an immobiliser. My insurance is up for renewal, so am going to shop around a bit.

Apart from the cylinder head problem, due to a faulty thermostat, it has been really reliable, always starts and lovely to drive - it is a really solid truck and I have had no probs with 2 MOTs - other than usual wear and tear of brakes etc. Remember, mine is a LWB, but I have friends who have SWB and have found them great - I am not sure how they would cope with 2 big horses and an Ifor 510 though, but 1 horse or 2 small ones, seem to be fine. The SWB are quite small inside, but if it is a second vehicle, that shouldn't be too much of a problem. I have done loads of towing miles with the Paj - Devon and back (from Essex) and most weekends we go up as far as Norfolk (120 mile round trip) for pleasure rides, and I have never had a problem, it has got me out of some pretty sticky fields too, with 2 horses in the trailer.

I think that has answered everything, feel free to PM me if you have any more questions!
