hi, measured my yearling colt he is 14.2hhs but is in middle of a growth so he will be 14.3hh when finishs this growth. what will he finish. you see his dam is 15.1hhs, sire is 16.2hhs but all of sires family finished near 17hhs. i think he will finish 15.3-16hhs. but has very tall legs so thinking he might make 16.1-2hhs.

what do you all think thanks.

Sorry havent got a foggyest!!! My friends yearling filly is 15hh all ready!!!. But same friend her stallion was 15.1hh as a yearling and in the past 2 years has only grown 1 1/2 inches, so I dont think you can really tell!!!!

I don't think you can know for sure, it also depends on breeds a yearling tb will be alot further on in its height development than say a warmblood.

I have 2 yearlings, 1 warmblood cross currently standing just over 15.1hh at 16 months, he should make 16.2+? The other is a welsh cross currently 14hh at 15 months old and he should make 15hh+?

My horse was that big as a yearling and was advertised to make 15.2 when I bought him. His dam was a 16 hand warmblood and his sire a 15 hand Arab, he was 15.3hh as a 4 year old but suddenly had a growth spurt at 5-6 years old and is now 16.2 :)
His old owner/breeder was most upset as he'd only sold him because he didn't think he was going to be big enough for him.

With a friend, take a piece of string, stretch it from the fetlock to the elbow (the bit where his leg meets his tummy). Then turn that the other way up (keeping it stretched) so its then going from elbow to above his withers. This is how big he'll get! Apparently its really quite accurate.

thanks, havent shown him yet, he is very quiet well mannered colt, got his feet done for 1st time last week, even though wasnt much to take of, more a pair than trim, well was experience for him with blacksmith, the blacksmith he was a gentleman of a horse to work with, he really his a very good colt. he is homozygous tested so will always producw coloured foals.
