A friend has recently aquired a gorgeous yearling filly (18 months old). Prior to my friend having her she was turned out next to a colt (also 18 months) that was repeatedly found in the field with her. This was one of the reasons she was for sale as the colt was becoming a nightmare with her there (or so I'm told).

Yearling has little covering on neck, shoulders and bum (not poor but definately not carrying excess fat) but quite a belly. Worming is up to date.

Is it possible that she could be in foal (and if so how likely?). Vet will be coming up within the next few weeks anyway so she will also run it past him.

mmm, my mare was the result of an accident with a 2 year old filly in next door field to a 2 year old colt!!! Not to scare you!! Fingers crossed the vet can give you confirmation one way or another......

Even though the belly is quite high (if that makes any sense??) Last few youngsters have had a belly on them but this one just looks different???

Fingers crosses she is just an odd shape and going through an ugly phase eh!

I have experienced this first hand and my advice would be to get the Vet out. My filly was born 01/04/06 and was transported to Cornwall 03/06/07 - some 2 months after we moved. She was left in the 'care' of the YO while I located grazing and sourced reliable transport. By October she was looking a funny shape and I mentioned to my OH that she looked in foal - he dismissed this as she was only 18 months old. To cut a long story short she foaled 23/05/08 when she was only just over 2 years old. Both she and her colt foal survived, the colt was very down on his pasterns and the filly was poor for a long time. She is now 3 and a half and her growth has been retarded but she is making progress. In time I'm sure she wwill fully recover from what was a far from ideal situation. It transpires she had been out with yearling colts and the YO had not anticipated this would be a problem.

Thanks, will pass your story onto my friend. Pleased to hear your little filly is doing OK now

Where I used to keep my pony when I was a kid, a filly there had a foal when she as less than 2 years old.
They used to run all the new foals together after weaning till they were yearlings.
She never grew to her full height and I think there was other damage that meant she would never be ridden.
Shame I remember a really pretty little part arab skewbald filly.

Won't hurt to get the vet out to put your mind at rest and discuss the implications if she is.

I used to know a lovely little mare who had been left permanently stunted and with internal organ problems due to foaling when she was only 2 years old. Where there is a willy, there is a way

, so I'd have the vet come and give this little girl an internal. It does just sound like a pot belly as many youngsters have, and first time foals often hardly show until the week before they arrive, but put your mind at rest and speak to your vet.
