Hi.
I have a yearling gelding and have no idea what to do with him until he's four... He's at the yard I keep my tb at but can't stay there much longer as all the horses come in at night in winter and this isn't necessary for him. Has anyone been in a similar situation? The options are... loan him out as a companion? find somewhere cheaper, can't seem to find anywhere, where do I look? Or sell? What have you done with your youngsters? I don't have any of my own land and am trying to find a financially viable option so I can keep him.
Any help appreciated
EC

find someone with enough land and a few youngsters who will let him run with theirs. good fencing, nice handling, worming, feet trimmed regularly should all be essential. he'll have a nice time growing up with lots of mates, and if it's close enough, you can go and give him some handling/fuss when it suits you.

I'm in Herefordshire, have had a look at local studs online but most seem to 'posh' if you know what I mean... I rang a couple of places earlier in the year when we weaned him but they weren't very helpful... He's a lovely little chap, gets on well with other horses, and is nice to handle... Does anyone keep young stock locally? Its the first time I've owned a youngster so I've not had this problem before...

Hello
I own a yearling which I keep at livery and like your situation he has to come in at night with the others but he is happy to do this as he hates being out alone!

I know 4 years is a long time to wait but in the meatime with my horse I'm just spening time with him. Lots of grooming, going for walks and I'm just about to start some training for in-hand shows next year.

Have you decided what you are going to do?
