Yellow lab or choc???

We've got a lovely choc lab girl that we were given when she was two as her owners couldn't manage. We had cream sofas when she came, which were quickly covered in hair and dirt, so, not being a great fan of housework, we swopped the sofas for chocolate lab coloured ones!

We've recently decided to get another one from a lab rescue centre, and had pretty much decided on another choc or black one, however the rescue centre were telling us that there is another yellow one that would suit our outdoor life. We have land and stables, and open country around us, and it gets very muddy, with iron in the mud. My head says avoid the yellow one as it will get black and the hair will show up again. however after seeing photos, he's SO cute, so my heart is saying "we'd manage - just brush him more...etc.." Theres another choc available, but I'm more drawn to the pic of the yellow one.

What would you do? Do any of you have yellow ones, particularly working/farm ones, and how dirty do they get! Would you go for the yellow or the choc?

Personally, I would go yellow but that's as I use mine as gundogs and I don't have the time/patience for working a choc lab. They are wired to the moon :D :D I do find my yellow lab smells more than my black lab, but mud brushes (or hoses :p) off easily

Yes, this is the sensible option.

Love your dog GinaB. Our choc has legs that colour too, you just can't tell! My husband fancies doing some gun dog training. We do gun dog drives at gamefairs, and the choc is hysterical. The bloke that runs them said he he hates choc labs for working dogs, and wouldn't even have a choc lab to feed to his spaniels!
 
Yellow Dog spends his time at the yard merrily digging the muckheap and generally enjoying being mucky but as his coat is so short the mud comes off really easy once its dry. He does pong a bit tho :o but we'ree used to it :D I bathed him the other day and teh water coming off was the same colour as his hair - he was several shades lighter lol but looked all offended :D

Well the decision was taken out of my hand. i rang them this morning to discuss it, and the choc had already gone. He was pretty well behaved and trained, and two yrs old, so could go anywhere. The yellow one is only just one, and has been in 4 homes already (not for anything naughty, but because they all got pregnant/had babies and ditched the dog because it was energetic and strong on the lead). So we're hoping that moving to our farm, with lots of exercise and training, along with another dog to learn the ropes from, should do the trick. It worked with the last mad lab we got given. So we're going to view him on Sunday, and see how our current lab gets on with him. Fingers crossed - will let you know!
 
In my personal experience - black labs don't moult nearly as much as yellows!

I am sure this is not scientifically factual but from the ones I have had it is true!! :p

I don't think I would have another yellow lab again purely for that reason!! My poor hoover just can't cope with it!
 
yellow!!! I loved my yellow lab although he did have a problem with being yellow and returned from a many a walk two tone but i think he enjoyed the hosepipe bath as much as wallowing in the mud!!! I would have another tomorrow but must not *must keep repeating*
 
Well, Yellow lab is home!

We went tosee him yesterday at the rescue centre, and he was mad as a box of frogs, but gorgeous, and got on well with our choc.

Brought him home, and had them running round our fields all afternoon, and on a long walk (discovered he likes swimming as much as the choc!). He met some cows (had to be told off for barking), met our horses (another telling off, and the 17h hunter had a good sniff of him, so he was pretty wary of him!)

After all that exercise, we thought we'd have an easy night. No! He's only 13 months, and this is his 4th home. Looks like he's never hada chance to grow up, or do any training. He has so much puppy like energy. He played all night. I went to the loo at 2am, and was met by him sitting with his lead in his mouth outside the door! This morning we woke up to every pair of shoes in the kitchen piled up in his basket (thankfully not chewed!). Currently trying to book him in at the vets to get his bits chopped off, as he's had a go at everything - including the 20yr old cat!

I can see why he was sent back a lot. If we didn't have so much land to let him run on he would be a nightmare! Me and choc lab are going to be so fit soon. Just about to go on a 3hr walk. We WILL wear him out! Not giving up on him. We will get there. Think it may be an amusing ride! If anyone saw the film Marley and Me, then you will have an idea of what we have come home with!
 
Aw, he sounds very entertaining - love the thought of the shoe mountain :D

Great that he gets on with your other dog and will have the chance to let off steam. Poor chap being passed around, at least he now has a forever home.

Looking forward to pics of him (p.s: you chose the right colour in the end :rolleyes:)
 
I grew up with Yellow Labs - mother hoovered twice a day and brushed them to within an inch of their little lives. :D They got filthy on walks and were a complete hanful but we adored them :D I now have a malamute that makes those labs seem like a walk in the park lol
 
Will try and post some pics. I'm a bit of a technophobe! In the meantime, if you go to www.homealabrador.net he is in the dogs for rehoming section still, and is called Rory... Anyone know of anyone who could take Ted who is on there - he was gorgeous - much more lively than he looked on the website, and he desperately needs a new best friend... He'd suit an older person who is home a lot. I tried to persuade hubby to have him too!

We went for a huge walk up some massive hills today, and went for a swim en route (well the dogs did!), as well as a lot of running round at the stables, so I've finally tired him out and he's crashed out in his bed! Going to make him get up again so he sleeps at night. Me and Honey, the choc are exhausted too. We both could do with losing a few pounds, so he's getting us fit! He's going to the vets tomorrow to have his bits chopped, so that will help too. Feel like theres already some progress, but still miles to go!
