Yet again, problem with loan mare, the one that was hard to catch...

Yet again i have another problem! This time not horses fault though :rolleyes: so like i said in my previous post, i was considering giving her back, then we found the problem and she got much better, but eventhou she got better i still wanted to give her back as i just don't feel like either of us can progress anymore and its just not fair on either of us really, she should have a chance to learn more and enjoy things she enjoys doing and i should be able to do what i want to do, and as she's getting older, she's clearly telling me that she just wants a bit quieter life and as i'm getting older, getting more experience, getting more confident, i wanna do more, i'd like to start doing BS and BE, she's just saying ''but i'd rather go for a fun hack!'' so i said to owner who wanted to me to buy her, ''so sorry but can't buy her'' owner asked for her back, but now she wants me to keep her till march, supposedly to keep her costs down over the winter which i get but i dont really want to keep her till march as i've found a horse that i really like and would be perfect to do what i want for the next 3 years, perfect timing as well as owner is going to uni for 3 years and in 3 years i'm going to uni so its absolutely perfect BUT i have not rang about it or ridden it as i don't want to mess anyone about incase it doesnt get sorted with current mare. so my question is, do i keep said mare till march and then try finding something else or do i say to the owner that i'd like her to go back now, if so, how?!

I feel a bit sorry for this mare. Let her go, she deserves to be with someone who loves her. Tell the owner that you will keep her for a month while she sorts out somewhere to put her, but thats all. Then speak to the other person, and tell them you can share/loan/whatever in a few weeks time.
 
Owner of current mare sounds to be taking the pee. No one wants the high costs and dark wet nights of winter but its her horse so tough. Don't let her push you into paying the costs of a horse you don't want to buy. Ring about the other one, it might be perfect. It might not though so keep an open mind and eye. Just tell her firmly but politely that this mare is not the horse for you and you won't pay for her over the winter.
 
i do love her, just trying to do right by her, owner will sell her straight away.. noq i feel bad and thinking should keep her. oh i'm just so confused! :(
 
I would (if you were happy to) suggest that you would be happy for potential purchasers to see you riding her, or have her advertised while she is still with you.

Obviously though you would not want this to be indefinite period, so possibly 1-2 months, whatever you feel comfortable with. That means she should have a better chance of finding an new home, while still in work. You probably need to give a months notice anyway.

I also would try the new horse, it may or may not be right for you, if it is the owner of that one may give you time to sort out the current loan you have nay way.
 
The fact that you have written this post shows that she's not the horse for you as you both want differnt things, nothing wrong with that so don't feel guilty, horses are expensive anyway even more so through winter, so be practical here, if you have seen a more suitable horse that you can compete seriously, then your going to need this winter to get to grips with the new horse and save up for the next season, not waste the next 6 months on something that is not suitable for what you want.

If you have an agreement in place make sure you give notice (what ever that time period is) and return the horse, meantime don't loose out on the opportunity of this other.

If you've already told the owner you'd keep her till March then yes its unfair to mess her about, if not sort it out ....as in today!!

i assume you have a loan agreement that tells you what notice period you have to give to return the mare? if so give the owner the set amount of notice (send letter stating you wish to return horse on x date) and get on with sorting yourself with a horse that suits you:)
And don't feel guilty, the horse isn't right for you and you are actually doing the right thing by sending her back rather than trying to make her fit in with what you want from her at her age:)
