Now I know that there have been many threads about the 4x4 and Trailer debate but I am rapidly going mad with all the comparisons I am doing regarding the best 4x4 to tow an Ifor Williams 510 with one DWB 17.2hh mare who weighs under 550kg

Now I have worked out the trailer weight unladed - 1000kg - add in the horse 550 which leaves me plenty of weight allowance for other stuff.

Now here is the dilemma - I have spent three weeks ploughing through data for various 4x4's to tow the **** thing with - (my OH has offered to give me £5000 for the car) ( I have to use an automatic as I have developed arthritis in my left knee) The car will also serve as my main car for to and fro from work etc

So I came up with several options:

Landrover Freelander 2.0 TD4 - affordable - and not too thirsty or big
Landrover Discovery - to thirsty and expensive for a good one
Izusu Trooper - too old says OH
Kia Sorento - too expensive say OH
Mitsubishi Shogun - too big
Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7 - still not made my mind up on this one

I am totally confused, have trawled through loads of data, looked at too many cars for my sanity

PLEASE someone help.........

Chocolate, wine and hugs to anyone who has managed to get through my ravings and can help

I know you said they were too expensive but an automatic KIA sorento are very good tow cars!
I have a manual but most say the automatics are equally as good if not better!

I tow with a grand jeep cheokee too, and its fantastic. I use it for everyday too, its ok as its diesel.

I used to have a freelander and found that it used to struggle when the trailer was fully loaded

Landrover Freelander 2.0 TD4 - not big enough - and not very strong or economical Landrover Discovery - not too thirsty and value for a good one if you choose carefully
Izusu Trooper - pre 3ltr ok who cares how old it is if it does the job
Kia Sorento - too expensive says OH.. if you have to have a new one
Mitsubishi Shogun - swb 3.2 just the right size good towing and fairly economical reliable Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7 - still not made my mind up on this one??A should be ok if not exciting

hope the edit helps.. you could also look at a jeep or a toyota landcruiser

Iv got a freelander and it does the job. You can pick them up at a reasonable price too and they arent too pricey to run.

Failing that my second choice would of been the santa fei.

Good luck!

I pull my 511 and 596kg horse with a new Santa Fe it's brilliant!

Do some research on the Freelander I have heard that they are not very good towing a heavy trailer and 550kg horse..

Many thanks for the replies:

I have a Freelander 1.8XEI petrol at the moment, which I know wouldn't tow so that is why I was considering the TD4 - I keep on getting conflicting comments regarding the TD4 ability.

The Ifor Williams dealer seemed to think it would be fine - the braked towing weight is within the regulations - but I am still concerned as my gut reaction is that it would not have enough 'grunt'.

The Kia Sorento is like hens teeth with regards to second hand around here - the cheapest auto I have seen is over £10k - if you know of any cheaper ones please let me know

The Santa Fe seems to be a reasonable option - I am hoping to look at 3 tomorrow

Perfect11s - I agree with you about the Trooper and all the other older types - but when it is my OH providing the money he has a say in what I buy - if he says it is too old then my hands are tied :(

I hate this trying to decide what to buy - who says women enjoy shopping!!!

Then after I have found the right car I have to sort out selling the lorry - grrrrrr - Perhaps I should have let my daughter have a hamster instead of a horse :)

Why not stick with a lorry ???? I guess 5k plus say 2.5k for the trailer then the tax is £225+ and seriouly a 4x4 running about is going to do less than 30MPG!! and can realy cost on tyres and repairs , lorry and small diesel car for me every time but I do a fair weekly mileage ....

I need to have an automatic, I currently have a Renault Dodge 50 which, whilst perfect for what I want I am soon going to be unable to drive it due to my knee problem (I have trouble changing gear - hence the need for an automatic). I also currently run a Freelander petrol version which I can't tow with - it is also a manual, I use it for transporting bedding, feed and on the odd occasion hay so a smaller car is not really an option. I also have to factor in that my daughter is also only able to drive an automatic (leg problem again) so when she is old enough to take a trailer test she will be able to use it as well, as she will not be able to drive the lorry.

So having to change both the car and the lorry means that an automatic car and trailer is really the only way forward. :(

Our 2003 KIA sorento was in your price limit and we worked out it is doing around 33mpg (including a long journey to Badminton and some local pootling). So not too expensive and will easily tow what you want, so I wouldn't write off yet! They are tricky to find though, but they do come up if you keep looking!
