Nope, I get the opposite. People who have known me for years can't understand why nowadays I have chosen to have small horses.

Let's face it, any horse which isn't full TB is just common scum. And few TB's are over 17hh.

But you understand the TB's are just a status symbol for the misguided

I get loads of "that horse is too big for you" and "you are overhorsed" and all tha jazz. At the end of the day I am pretty petite and lightweight - a 12hh would be too strong for me if it wanted to be so I say train train train and work on producing a horse with manners and that you have mutual love and respect with - that is the important thing - not the size! Although my boy is so big and handsome he just tears at my heartstrings! x

Maybe your horse is underhumaned...or maybe they are trying to tell you that you can't ride...

It's daft isn't it?...my only problem with people that ride big horses is that I get neck ache when talkin to them,in that I'm a short, fat and hairy horse fan!!

I can't believe you are really short, fat and hairy. What's your horse like then?

well mine is only 16.2 but i get people asking why i have a big horse when im skinny and little. alot of people have commented that i would be more suited to something 15 hands or so.

Oh Shilasdair you meanie!!... although so what if it's true - he's mine and I love him and he is happy and healthy so who cares

Of course I've watched you riding...so that was a targeted insult...not some random throwaway thing.
Perhaps your fellow liveries are getting sick of the crane and winch you use for mounting up?

My friend owns a 14hh and I ride a 14.2hh out with her and we get really dirty looks from people we pass on their big horses.

Although it's maybe the fact we bimble about with no stirrups and reins at the buckle!

On a GOOD day (when were those again! lol) Flint could out shine these bigger horses. Quicker, swifter, lighter on his feet.

I get the impression that people believe that the bigger the horse the bigger the go and bank balance. Its what suits the individual so if these people are saying that to you, at 17hh up in the air I would stick my fingers up and down to them(they would never reach you!)

S - it's true - every so often I like to show off and get on from the ground
smile.gif

I too went to buy something smaller and ended up with a biggy cause I fell in love with him over the stable door whilst they were tacking up the other horse... oops!

But making him kneel whilst your friends push and shove isn't good for his knees. He's not a camel you know (although I haven't seen his conformation so there may be some camel genes).

Love having a 17.1h find riding anything smaller really really strange I like the feeling of power

[/ QUOTE ]

Only trouble with the feeling of power is that sometimes it's followed by the feeling of gravity.

Where is St_Bernard? This sounds right up her street!

I like my Big Horse, even though I absolutely don't need a 17hh'er ! I am 5ft, i do look a bit stupid on him, but I trust him, he goes nicely for me and frankly, I am not over-keen on ponies. I wish I could get on from the ground, but its never going to happen.

I'm 5' and Cairo is a 16.3 Clydesdale - but we go well together - he is a true gentle giant and one of the nicest horses you could ride if you want to feel truely safe and relaxed.

At the end of the day, we used to do well competing and those who laughed to see a pea in a pod didn't when we were the SJ champions at HPF (ok it was only 2' but he was getting old).

Chancer is now 15 hands and still growing and I feel good on him - more so as he is chunking out. I personally prefer a large chunky type - more to hang onto.

My WB was 16.3 hh and everyone always said, "Ooh isn't he big". My current horse is 13.3 hh but everyone at my new yard must be too polite to say, "Ooh, isn't she tiny"!

I had a 15.2hh and bought a foal, she should have made 16-16,1hh. Unfortunately she forgot to stop growing, she is now 17hh and fairly solid!! When I just had my 15.2 everything over 16hh seemed really big, now 26hh look tiny, especailly when I'm unboard.
