Where is St_Bernard? This sounds right up her street!

I like my Big Horse, even though I absolutely don't need a 17hh'er ! I am 5ft, i do look a bit stupid on him, but I trust him, he goes nicely for me and frankly, I am not over-keen on ponies. I wish I could get on from the ground, but its never going to happen.

He he, well Im 5ft 5 and about 8 stones, horses are 16.2 and 17.3. I have them because of their temperments, and because my OH is 6ft 4 and looked ridiculous on our old 14.2hh!

I had more trouble in one day with that 14.2hh than Ive ever had with either of the big lads.

Persoally I feel safer on a bigger horse, I also dont feel safe on horses that are too fine, Lance is the perfect build and height for me.

Beau is actually a bit narrow for my liking!

A nice horse is a nice horse regardless of its size.

I got on a horse on holiday and put the stirrups up to schooling length to find the owner in fits of laughter as they were her jumping-length stirrups

If that comment about thinking you are better on bigger horses than smaller ones goes, then it also goes the other way! Some big horse riders think they are better than pony riders, and some pony riders think they are better than horse riders. The rest of us don't care a hoot and get on with life!
I happen to enjoy riding larger horses, even though I am small and lightweight and "should" be riding 15hhs. My friend told my boss recently that I like bigger horses and have fallen for the hugely chunky 16.2hh ish ID hunter/ eventer we currently have for schooling. There's no way on earth I'd be allowed to school him if I was thought to be over-horsed, but I have been riding him every day I'm working and although my legs don't work quite as well, I'm working on it and the horse is working well! I've not felt over-horsed for a long time, and last time I did was on my old 14.1hh pony who was just getting too much.
There's a lot more to it than the size of a horse, don't let them get to you. Who cares what anyone else thinks, get out there and be better than them at something and prove them right, not because your horse is big but because you and your horse are a good partnership!

I do think that there is a lot of type and size snobbery when it comes to horses.

There is nothing more boring than people who bang on about how big their horse is, or how well bred it is. So what??

It always reminds me of sad old men who drive sports cars in the mistaken belief that it makes them more attractive...
smirk.gif

Oh yes, you wonder why people feel the need to tell you what breed their horse is every other sentence and give you it's entire family history - including all of its illustrious half-siblings when all you said was 'hello'

SO SO true Dubs - at the end of the day who gives a shite, so long as the horse is doing what you want it to do for you and are happy, who cares

Exactly!

Take you for instance.

You want a fantastic jumper because that's your chosen discipline.

Obviously, given your height, you need a larger horse, that goes without saying, but that is for practical reasons. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe you'd give a stuff what breeding it had as long as it does the job you bought it for.

Did I ever mention that my old horse was half brother to the Badminton winner Moonfleet?

Sadly, though he looked just like him, the similarity ended there....

Totally agree though, about the type of people who drop things into conversation at every opportunity.

B...O...R...I...N...G

I don't care if your horse is related to Red Rum, and no I am not bothered by the fact that you can't get off or on it without a Stannah Stairlift. You are still a tw*t.

At 5ft 11 i was looking for something big.
Found my 18hh lad, but was asked why i needed anything that size. Personally i feel silly on anything under 17hh. Tried a 16.3hh mare, and because she was quite lean too, i felt really unsafe.
People often ask what it is like to fall off an 18 hander. My reply is always "I don't know, it's not an option" touch wood anyway, lol
smile.gif

Another plus, after i found my lad, i met my OH who is also a rider, and at 6ft 7, he needs something on the tall side. Perfect, family ponio!!
