Just a quick question as I know a few of you are now trying this, I've been collecting up the paper and newspapers in the office to shred and actually got quite a lot in a few days, but how much does it take to fill say a bag full does anyone know? Is it loads and loads? I need to buy a cross cut shredder, but I am thinking its going to have to be a bigger one, seen ones on ebay for about £50. But not sure if this is a really pointless little project!!!!

I tried shredding newspapers with our little domestic shredder. It kept jamming up though. I think newspaper is too soft. It doesn't go very far either. I must have done 5 or 6 local papers to get enough for my hutch! It took ages too.

I used what I did manage to do for my guinea pigs.

I work for a global company that disposes of confidential waste ( we collect paper for shredding).

One of our standard bags (about size of shavings bag or a bit bigger) takes 50kgs of paper to fill up. So you will have to collect a fair bit for a stable i'd have thought.

I have done this. I stock piled enough bags over a period of months till I'd have about 20. Fewer than this isn't worthwhile. Then I'd empty previous bedding and use it till I ran out again - used to give me about 6-8 weeks worth.
Trouble is the paper isn't very absorbent so you can't use it with a messy horse. Expect the stable to get smelly and wet. Because of this I used to use a stable disinfectant underneath and used it on top of rubber mats.
I have never tried with newspaper but when I've bought this in a get fed up with the newsprint on my rugs plus all my horses are either grey or have white socks.

My friend gets enough from her office and friends/neighbours to use as a bed for her horse.

Newspaper is much more absorbent than office paper. Cross cut shredders make paper that is much more compact and she doesn't like the cross cut shredsdings.

The farmer will not take paper either when he collects the muck heap.
