Sorry, yet another set of stupid questions!
Considering taking my OH's mare to a ridden hunter class at a 'Winter Woolies' show on Sunday - pretty much understand what we should both be wearing etc, and it is a 'judge may ride' comp. So just 2 more questions.
If the judge doesn't ride, or even if she/he does, will we still need to do an individual show as well? Watched loads of M&M classes - is it the same sort of thing for the individual thing if we do one?
Second question is a bit silly really - once we've got off to let judge ride, how the heck do I get back on??? Really need a mounting block as she is a full up 16.2 ISH, with a lot more of the irsh than the sh (true stamp of a King of Diamonds mare, my farrier said yesterday

Also if I can figure out how to post a video of me riding her, can someone be brutal and tell me if I look realy silly on her and equally if we just shouldn't bother? I won't take offence - she isn't mine after all!

ooh good luck - i'm no expert on ridden hunter but I can offer some help (I think).

Usually if the judge rides you are not required to do an individual show - this is normally then required in the championship (if you get through) - although I guess it all depends on the judge and I would prepare for both just in case.

Do you know if you are required to strip? You normally are in showing classes (again no expert on hunter) but if you are it is normal for a groom to enter the ring to brush off the horse and remove sweat marks etc - they can bring a mounting block (or give you a leg-up)

If not, I am sure if you are required to dis-mount, help will be allowed into the ring to see you safely on again

I always use one of the combi tack boxes/ mounting blocks - the judges are normally very grateful!

I can't see why you can't ask for a hand back up. I can only imagine the steward will help. This (as far as I am aware - its a while since I have watched anything but natives be shown - is normal).

You will still need to do an individual show so the judge can see your horses paces and assess their conformation, freedom of movement etc.

Ok, question 1 - If the judge doesnt ride you will be expected to do a show, walk trot and canter on both reins in a figure of 8, and a "gallop" (basically an extended canter), halt and salute for the judge also.

You will be allowed a groom to come in and help you, depending on the shows rules the groom may have to be dressed appropriately (Hat, jacket tie and boots etc) they quite often supply a mountain block for the judge to get on, so you can use that. Or the judges steward quite often will throw you aboard!!

As soon as you dismount in a ridden class, your grooms are allowed into the ring. Mine always comes along with a step as I put my hip out when I get a leg up. last show I went to the judge borrowed the steps to get on each horse!

Individual show if the judge doesn't ride - walk away, part trot figure of 8, canter part figure of 8 and extend in canter down the long side. Don't do too much!

For a winter woolies show, it is much more informal than a normal show, so I am sure everyone will be quite relaxed about getting people back on board!
 
I think you do strip off for WH classes,will be stewarding probably so i'll give you a leg up if you need one! Your very brave taking Millie (a whole lot of horse especially for us little people!) but she would do well i reckon.I know when i was going to do one the judge didn't ride in the under 14.2 class but did in the bigger one.
 
Lvrees, can I email you my vid? Can't find anywhere to post the blinking thing, youtube won't let me register for some reason!! Any advice hugely appreciated, never even watched a hunter class so going in totally blind! Vid is only us in the field at home, first time I've ever ridden her in a circle, usually just hack out!
Awesome, thanks 'fruity' (love the name BTW my dear!!) Are you helping out again on Sunday then? I still may not even go, not sure yet as the moose broke her bridle yesterday! Plus got the easter ride that morning with the others, so may be too short of time.
