My lad has been off work for a number of years and I have never clipped him. But his old owner used to have thick rugs on him most of the time and since coming to me I have used thinner rugs as I didn't feel he needed it and he soon roughed up and now he has an extreamly thick winter coat and he doesn't loose it all in the summer.

I am planning to start fittening him up in the next month or so, and due to him being unfit and hairy he is bount to sweat. I plan on having him stabled (hopfully) during the day and out at night with the appropriate rugs on.

****he will be hacked or schooled every day when he is a bit fitter. i would not give him a big clip until he was being schooled

Should I clip him? If so which clip do you think would be best?
I know it is past the clipping stage, but I don't feel I have much of an option as I need him fit but his coat is extreamly dence.
Also do people rent out clippers as I do not own any of my own and don't think I would be able to afford right now

Any options welcome thanks.

I'd play it by ear. If you are about to bring him back into work after years off you are not going to be able to do anything liable to get him sweated up for weeks anyway in which case by that time he might well have lost enough of his coat to work comfortably.

The weather will soon be getting warmer too which will make it easier to cool him off without risking a chill which is why you would be clipping anyway?

i think you should wait until you get him in regular work. because to start with your not exactly going to do lots of fast work. then when he starts to sweat essesive amouts clip

Ive said no, only as youve said you havent clipped him since you have had him, and its getting to the stage where most horses are beginning to shed. Seeing as hes been off for that amount of time, he should have (hopefully) got rid of most of his coat by the time he is ready to move up a gear in his fittening programme. Also if you dont have your own you will have to pay for someone to come and clip I assume, and quite alot of the time they will charge extortionate prices.
Also Ive just clipped my last horse of the season, and am still getting hair out my boots!

TCC - Yes I woudln't clip him until we moved up to schooling all I would give him for hacking would probably be a bib.

I do hope he will start to loose his coat but as I said it is just increadbly thick and I don't want to get to the stage where I am schooling him and the weather is warm and his summer coat is thicker than it should be.

Prittstick - Unfortunatly I would only need the clippers not someone to do it for me as yes they would charge a hell of a lot for something I could do myself if only I had clippers haha. Yes I havn't clipped him since i have had him but i imagin he would be okay to clip anyways and I would be willing to find that out. I also hope he would have lost his coat before we move up a gear......just extreamly worried he won't do

How well rugged is he at the mo? When its shedding time sometimes a fleece/waffle type rug is good under a top layer as the staticity and wicking action of the material often mean that loose and nearly loose hairs stick to the rug... Its the start of that time of year when a rubber curry comb is your best friend lol!

I may try adding one of those rugs under his, he is happily in a light medium and has been all winter and doesn't seem too hot in it tbh. I havn't taken his rug off for a day or so just re-arranged it whilst he was wearing it but when I do I will see if his hair is sticking to the inside, it probably is as it did last year and was a nightmare to get off haha.

I agree with Lzt on this one.

My boy is getting fit with a full wooly coat. He is only starting to sweat now as the work is getting a lot harder.

I would just see how things go. Their coats are coming out now anyway so before you know it you will have a nice summer coat
