Hi, I tried searching for yew on the forums but it won't let me as the word is too short!
The one bit of our new field that gets shade has a really old yew tree in the hedge, which my husband doesn't want to get rid of for various reasons (I am working on him…).
I guess I am fencing off that bit of the field and will have to find an alternative form of shade? (Am looking into field shelters) I know yew is really poisonous. Just wondering if anyone else had unavoidable yew in their field and what you did.

If it's that big it's probably subject to a TPO (tree preservation order) I'd be careful about chopping it until you're sure. Yew is horribly poisonous and takes very little to kill. I'd fence it off permanently.

I would be getting it removed, even if it wasnt mine. The fine would probably be less than the vet/cremation bill!

The fine can be up to £20,000 but the argument is moot if the tree isn't covered. You can find out from your local County Council which trees are covered. If it's not on your owned property you may be able to trim it back with owner's permission and you get to give them the nasty trimmings too!
