but the person has 5 horses to sell there... must be a dealer
It is pretty much the same as any auction. A mixture of people. The potters hang around the edge of the ring, you can spot them a mile off.
The auction house is well run, or was last time I was there but if you sell or buy your horse at auction it could come from or go to anywhere , lets face it. It is what it is.

Was just looking at catalogue (just window shopping!) & there's one that says "good home essential". So why sell at auction?

Because sometimes that is the only option, if they loose the land, struggle financially etc and simply don't have the time or want the hassle of having lots of strange folk coming onto their property, livery yard trying the horses out, you could be single parent, some livery yards are funny about strangers coming onto their yards and quite rightly so, sometimes it just easier, does mean to say they care any less.
There are lots of folk private buyers that simply go for a nosey and come back with a great horse, plus you stick a high reserve on and exchange details and arrange a viewing days after the sale.
Not only that but there are dealers out there that want to see a good horse go to good home.
I can understand that they might not have a choice & it reads like it's a dreadfully sad thing for them to do. But to say good home essential in an auction catalogue is at best waste of ink. You can't turn round & say "you can't bid because I don't like you". It rather reads like they have advertised before & just sent the ad wording for the catalogue. Then any potential buyers might wonder why they couldn't sell privately e.g. has it failed a vetting.
I've been a few times bid on a couple of irish cobs but the dealer had the reserves too high over £2400 so they didn't sell. Altough it's better than some i've been to i still found it sad and depressing. I wanted to buy everyting to give it a good home. Came away miserable
