Does anyone have any tips/advice on York Horse Sales? Thinking of having a pop down there tomorrow to look for a horse for a friend. Thinking of something about 16hh+.
We are not seasoned auction goers so what should we expect and what sort of prices do horses go for?
Have just read the thread on the Cambridge sales and was wondering if York is similar.

I have been and have accompanied a friend who bought a nice horse there. I think it is a question of buyer beware....some sellers seem very genuine and owners go to a lot of trouble to present their horses well with pictures of it competing etc. Some seem to stick them in a box and walk away. Murton is easy to find just off York ring road - anti clockwise. You need to get there early, find the owner, see the horse go around the paddock area. This is quite small if a lot of horses are being shown off. There is usually a jump set up.
If the horse is warrantied I think you have 24hours guarantee
but you need to check this on the auction centre web site - www.ylc.co.uk. The ring they are sold in is quite small and the area can get very crowded - the good horses fetch good money especially if two people want it! My friend got her mare for 2,800 - 16.2 8 year old irish draught cross, last year. She's now doing a good dressage test but has a blemish on lower leg where it has been caught in wire in its youth. Hope this helps and good luck. Val

Thanks Val, that does help.
I think we might just mosey along and see how things go. We are not in a rush to buy so can wait until next month, but it'd be nice to get a feel for the place.
£2800 seems a bit too much for my friend, as she's kinda hoping for a bargain at the sales, rather than paying normal "advertised" priced, but if your friend is now going places on her horse, then she certainly got a bargain.
Gone are the days of getting a nice horse for £200, like back in my childhood!!

I went with my friend a couple of months ago and we were really disapointed. It was ok if you wanted a little 12 hand pony but all the bigger ones were pityful to be honest. One or two looked ok and there was a nice ID mare who was heavily in foal.

We only stayed for an hour once the auction started and only saw some little ponies go through but they were all fetching about £700-£800 for tiny ponies

No Rufforth sales were/are something different. York sales are at York Livestock Centre in Murton.
Still might give it a try even if the selection is sometimes disappointing. I looked at the catalogue and there were a few 16hh ones, but they sounded nice, so will probably go for a bomb.
Does anywhere do free horses???

york sales replaced rufforth when they started doing car boots. If you go on the york website and register you can see the lots descriptions and prices from previous sales. If your friend likes tb s i would recommend doncaster bloodstock sales for a bargin quality horse. good luck.
