Can anyone give me some advice on this. Do you think it is a suitable place to take my son and my OH (who do not ride) with me so that they can go off fishing for the day or do something else but stay at the riding centre and is it best to take your own horse with you or just use their horses. Is the accommodation nice as OH likes his posh hotels .

If not are there any posh hotels nearby that I could put them in !
Oh and is there any fishing nearby (think it is fly fishing they do)

It is great for riding but (unless it has changed a lot) you could compare it to a posh hotel. It's best to use their horses as you get to ride a variety. I don'y know if there is stuff to do for non horsey people and it is quite expensive if just to be used as a hotel!

best to contact them and ask

Right can sort of help with some of this, as been up once or twice for lessons and just booked a short course with them in September.
Their current prices are as follows:

Livery:
Stable preparation (£10) -bloomin' cheek if you ask me!!
Then £11 per night DIY on straw, plus £1.75 per day if you want haylage
Turnout free for 1 hour per day

Lessons with advanced instructor
£36 on own horse
£56 on school horse
Group lessons on own horse are £20
Group lessons on school horse are £40

So price-wise it is probably slightly cheaper to take your own horse, but not much in it really.

I've only ever ridden one of the school horses, but she was very nice - my understanding is they are retired competition horses as well as some 'ordinary' riding school horses for less experienced pupils. So if you're a decent rider I don't think you'd get stuck with an old nag!

Re accommodation I don't really know what it's like, but they do offer chalets which would be private and presumably more upmarket than the hostel-style accommodation. YRC is close to Ripon and Harrogate both of which would have nice hotels, Harrogate especially.

Can't help with fishing I'm afraid, but I'm sure there would be plenty of places round about if you search on the web.

Hope that helps a bit

River Aire is not far, so I imagine there's a lot of fishing. Don't know about the riding centre, but if you don't want to stay there, then Harrogate has plenty of nice hotels in the centre, as does Ripon.

I have stayed there quite a lot. The guest house is much better than the chalets in terms of accommodation (en suite rooms, etc) and food and would I think be a better option for an OH who likes posh hotels (chalet rooms are ok but definitely not posh and , unless they have changed since my last visit, they have shared bathrooms).

I like my comforts and always stay in the guest house.

However if you are looking for such things as a TV in your room, room service etc, then you may be better off looking at hotels in nearby Harrogate.

Also, it might not be a problem for your family (but definitely would be for my OH) - conversation at guest house dinner (at large communal table) does tend to the very horsey as you would expect and your family might get a bit fed up - although you could always escape into Harrogate for dinner (has some good restaurants).

In terms of local stuff for non riders to do, maybe the yorkshire tourist board websites might be able to help (and York is within driving distance if they felt like a change from fishing).

Unless you particularly wanted to work with your horse, it is worth riding the school horses - they have some fabulous schoolmasters there and even the "novice ride" horses are all far more responsive and well trained than you would find at most schools. Of course you could always take your horse and arrange to have some lessons with him/her, some on school horses.
