you know you look down too much when you ride when...

*vomits quietly in corner *

I can't see where you're from, but please say it's not the UK! And if it is, please say your definition of "large" is 12"!

UK and a good 2 - 3 feet long nearly the width of my wrist at thickest point and black - was cantering so didn't get very good look.

Well done to B for not stepping on it :D And I've seen a snake today too, also about 2ft long, definitely an adder, dark with a very distinctive zig zaggy line all the way down to the tip of its tail, but not to worry as it was rather flat, think it might have been pretending to be part of the road... :) Don't get me wrong, I love snakes, just not when they get in the way when i'm on my spooky horse :)

We had an adder in our garden last summer and my mum saw one crossing the road into our garden again this summer. As a result I am always looking down when I'm walking in the field or hacking out. I was planning on having some nice flower beds around the garden and the yard but now I know there are snakes in the area I'm going for the plain lawn and no beds for them to hide in look.

If it was over 2ft long I reckon it must have been a harmless grass snake (as in no harm unless it caused you to fall off!) We had a 3ft+ one in the garden once eyeing up the baby guinea pig till we all went to look at it and it slid away pretty quickly. Adders are harder to find than grass snakes and usually shy, but they like forest clearings and moorland. If you're worried then use G**gle or books to check what they look like, and if you see a different one then it's probably escaped from someone's house or pet shop ;P
Err, I'm typing this in Canada (holiday) and have booked a trail ride for tuesday...I think they have rattlesnakes here, :O

First mistake was opening this post, second mistake reading it.......

OMG I hate snakes to the point that there may have been one spotted on the lawn of our last house and I refused to come out until a proper check had been done and even then I wanted to move!!!!!! Ewwwwwwww

My 'pet' grass snake scared the bedjayzus out of one of the sharers from next door when she popped in last week.
Its been sunning itself near the muck heap recently, but on that day it had slithered out from by the feed shed..... cue manic posting on faceache from her :biggrin3:

Here in NW Surrey we do have a number of adders, so its best to stick to tracks you can see where you are going at this time of the year, rather than 'yomp' over heather or narrow tracks etc :)

I was on high Adder alert yesterday when we took kids & dog to a nearby nature reserve/ forest 'Rushmere park'. I was also checking out the bridleways as you can buy a permit to ride it.
It's great, they've put in a goblin trail and nailed little wooden doors to the base of hidden tree trunks. So whilst the kids are knocking on the doors trying to wake the goblins I'm thinking 'please don't let there be any adders!'
Goblins I can handle, snakes noooo!
