I've just come back from a six day break in Christchurch, Dorset. We spent loads of time in the New Forest where I've been about ten times in the past, and every time I go, I hate coming home to the rain and wind which seems to prevail almost permanently in the North West. I hope you all realise just how lucky you are to have all that riding on your doorstep. I would give anything to be able to live down there. We passed so many lovely looking yards. I know that being a northerner I'm not supposed to say that I would love to live down south, but I am soooo jealous of those of you who are able to live in such a fabulous area.....still, not checked my lucky dip Euromillions ticket yet!

On the minus side - you all drive way way way too fast! What's all the rush about????? Never seen so much traffic in my life!

Hang on! When I moved to Somerset from the Borders I couldn't get over the amount of rain and wind down here - and we only get proper snow about once in ten years. But I do miss the way the hawthorn trees lean away from the wind in the North.........

And as for driving fast - it's the only thing they do do quickly. You try to get a tradesman to come round urgently!

Why on earth would you want to live down there!

Hosepipe bans
pubs close early
to much traffic
high house prices

Bah - I will stay up here (much to everyones relief...)

Ha ha this made me laugh. I have recently moved from the NW (Lancashire) to East Anglia. The two things I have noticed (apart from everyone talking funny) is the speed people drive and how soft people are!! Horses (& their owners) are in winter clothes already...what do they all do when its actually winter?! Although perhaps this weather is as bad as it gets Down South... I hope so!!

:)

No, don't agree used to live in Windsor now in Aberdeenshire. Wouldn't trade for anything. Swapped £600 pcm livery (10 years ago) to 6 of my own, at home. Winters are a thought though!

South is one big bottleneck!! North room to breathe, we dont have the M25, M23 etc. just lovely clear roads. I love the north!!

I grew up in the north west, moved to the midlands, south wales, then right down to the south coast. Yes the weather is better down south, and the fields don't get half as muddy, but after nearly 20 years away I came right back! When the weather is nice up here I realise why I love it. Theres no place like home.

I still work in London now and again, and breathe a sigh of relief to put all the traffic and rudeness behind me once I get off the M25 and set off back up North (towards the clouds!). It took me years of travelling and moving around to realise that the grass isn't greener on the other side. (It also made me see how the UK has some wonderful scenery everywhere too!)

The weather is the only thing that puts me off moving North (that and Northerners :p :D )

We do have exceptionally good weather where I live often you see the clouds skirt around our little oasis. But at least you do not have astronomical hay prices, livery prices, anything to do with horses prices and house prices. Traffic is bad in some areas but we do have lots of lovely riding on the South Downs as long as you do not have to cross umpteen roads to get there.

My northern friends always walk around in T-shirts in December whilst I wear a coat at the drop of a hat.

Im a southerner, but have to say that the north has some fab scenary! You have the lake district for a start. Granted it is always raining, but hey! You have some lovely old stone buildings and I love the stone walls. I think the North in Summer far out weighs the south.

I am a big fairy and hate the cold, but my yard is right on the seafront and we have terrible winters. Constantly foggy and blowing a gale, rainy and driving rain too.

I have family in the north and the east of the country. I wouldn't mind moving up north. They seem a much friendlier bunch of people with a more laid back lifestyle.

hahaha i'm a southener born and bred. Although live in Portsmouth about 45 mins away from the new forest. i agree its beautiful and would love nothing better than to live out there but...

1. have you seen the house prices???? Its just silly. You could buy a full equestrian centre up north for the price of a 1 bed flat down here. Its not fair :(

2. the flies in the new forest are horrible and generally new forest ponies are the only ones who aren't bothered by them. Can't remember the name of them but they are special breed of flies that have really horrible bites.

but still, once I win the lottery i'm straight out there :)

I moved from the Midlands to the NW 12 years ago and I love it up here.

Love the scenery, the ease of getting to beautiful scenery and also to the cosmopolitan cities of Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool.

We have everything and more :) and friendly people too, which is a bonus :).

And don't forget the bone dry summer meaning no grass and having to feed my lot hay for most of the summer - hay which is £8 a bale.

My farrier is £82 a set and my yard rent is more than my mortgage.

And I'd have to hack for a good 45 mins along a main duel carridgeway to get to a bridlepath.

Bushbaby28 - crab flies 'ORIBBLE beasties which make the horses go balistic if they aren't used to them.

Yup, them pesky crab flies. Horrid things. Once on your horse they won't fly off, no matter how much you swatt them, they just scuttle out of reach, usually under the horses belly.... I had my first horse when I lived in Ringwood, about 20 years ago, can remember they drove him absolutely nuts!!!

We've just moved back to Lincs after I spent 20 years living and working in Herts. The whole family are more relaxed now, people are friendlier and have time for each other. They all drive like looneys and high viz seems none existant tho. Not looking forward to our first winter, but I'm sire we'll cope!
We went back recently to visit some friends and felt as if we were suffocating with the traffic and buildings everywhere, it was so nice to be home !

ah... one to speak up for the South - I live in Surrey, my horse lives on the downs and I have fab hacking. Loads of venues to get to and love the fact that I can to London very quickly. My village is really pretty and as for fast drivers.. hmm, having lived in London for over 10 years and being in sales... I am one of the culprits! I don't miss out on the rotten weather all together though - Yard if 500" above the town so does get real temperature extremes and we struggled with the snow.

I would happily change the house prices but I think we too have fab scenery "down South"..!

I was in Christchurch a couple of months ago and I fell in love with it too, it is lovely. And every time we drove through the forest I drove my husband mad going on about how my horse would love it. Unfortunately as I already live on the south coast I know it isn't all wide open spaces. It's ok if you are lucky enough to have direct access to the Downs but most of my riding is done on the roads.
