I've noticed my 2 year old eating what I thought was bits of tree from a distance! So while he was along the hedge row in his usual spot this morning I went to inspect what he was eating! Thinking maybe there would be a blackberry bush in there or something!

Only to discover him eating stinging nettles. Now I know horses will eat them if there's nothing else but there is, he's in a massive 4 acre field with plenty of grass and 2 friends.

So I'm wondering! Is he just a weird boy OR an evil genius? Because it turns out the area he's eaten is a nice little sheltered spot under some small tree in the hegde row! Big enough to shelter at least 2 horses!

Also there's plenty of nettles elsewhere that he's not tackled?

they are a great source of iron and also a great detox, horses are great at self medicating with hedgerow herbs, sounds like he may just be eating what his body needs

Mine love stinging nettles. I do cut some down to wilt but at this time of year mine seem to enjoy crunching on the thick stems.

My 2 LOVE stinging nettles. When the pony had lami he had big piles of nettles to munch through once he had finished his little bit of hay.

They are kept in a bare paddock at night and usually get a pile of nettles (if I have to cut them) most days. Pony was itching to get in there last night as the nettles had dried and were looking tempting!

Oh cool so maybe its a baby thing then? I did notice my shettie doing it the other day too but assumed it was where they don't have much grass! But I'm disappointed he's not an evil genius! There's still time I guess?

Mandwhy, I can do you a deal, you pay my vet bills and you can borrow the nettle muchers for a couple of weeks haha :)
