Young child rider insurance - where?!

Hello,

I need to get rider insurance for my daughter who will be 4 next month as she'll be doing some riding on a lead rein on a friend's super reliable pony, but friend would feel more comfortable if my little one had her own insurance.
I can only seem to find insurance for children over the age of 5, but does anyone know of a good insurer who will do younger kids?

Try NFU Mutual if you are in the UK, but expect to pay a massive premium, probably far more than an adult rider.

If she is on a lead rein, is it really worth getting specific insurance? What is the risk and likelihood? If you feel that way then you probably should consider that it is probably its too risky letting her ride at all. Depending in what country you are from, do you have full health insurance cover as this is more important?

Does the owner of the pony have 3rd party liability cover in case the pony caused an accident or injury to someone else?

Pony Club insurance covers riders down to the age of 4 and is included in membership. BHS Gold also covers young riders - but might stop at 5. World Horse Welfare membership also includes rider insurance - but again this might stop at 5.

But what is it you re seeking to insure against? There is no way a 4 year old could be culpable in third party damage - which as the law currently stands would fall to the owner anyway and be covered by the owner's insurance. If there is an accident, insurance would not exceed the cover provided by the NHS - although you could take out private health cover if you were worried about longer term damage? You don't have to cover school fees or replace a lost salary as a result of being unable to attend school / work for a period of time. I can't think of anything else to insure against?
 
Pony is fully insured, friend I think is crossing the Ts and dotting the Is just in case. Personally as she'll be on the lead rein I don't think she needs it, however thought I'd better look into it.
