I am having to down size from a 7.5t horsebox to a towing vehicle and trailer.
My daughter will be taking her towing test, and I'm old enough to not need to!
What companies have young drivers found insurance is reasonable on, and does the vehicle make a difference? I'm thinking along the lines of landrover, Range Rover or a 4 x4 pick up type vehicle.
However, my own insurance won't even cover her to drive my Citroen C1 becasue she's an estate agent (apparently incase she uses my vehicle for her work! I don't think so). She has 2 years clean licence and (touch wood) no accidents.
So, any hints, tips and help appreciated on how easy it is to get insurance on towing vehicles for under 25s.
Any recommended companies and suggestions on vehicles would be appreciated.

Never heard of any driver of any age having towing insurance issues

At least you can do this ........

SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.

All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.

The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner
The supervising driver does not need to be insured unless they are driving

Thanks Rog.
I'm hoping some of the young folk themselves may offer an insight into the insurance companies they are with, too, so I can approach them for quotes.

Recommendations are always the best way to go

There is also the choice of having own or being named on anothers

I remember I couldn't do my b+e until I was 25 (or was it 23!?) as the insurance was astronomical. More than the car cost sort of figures.

Think our 4x4 is insured with Direct Line for a couple of hundred odd really as they won't cover me for under a grand on my daily drive, an ancient Ford Focus!!

I have my B + E booked in two weeks eek!!! Im'm 30 at the weekend , have 9 years driving experience, clean driving licence but to put me on the old discovery about 18 years old, it was around £850 fully comp!!!! You have to have fully comp because of towing, my car costs me about £280!

We have decided to insure out old 110 Land Rover fully comp as it is a classic and has only cost £220 with a specialist classic Land Rover policy. Not the prettiest but it will get me about! The Land Rover is about 25 years old and changed from a Petrol Engine to a Diesel

hi im 22 and tow with a short wheelbase 12 yr old defender. everyone in family incl 2 younger brothers r insured on it for 500 a year fully comp, without brothers it would be 400. I'm the main driver, insured it through NFU no problem i hope this helps

I had a friend with a 19 year old daughter. Could not get insurance for mini (or any other car for a sensible price) but no problem with Nissan Navara pick up.

Can you tow on third party ROG?
The pick up is something I will look into, but friends who tow with them, say they can be a pain for turning in to gateways as turning circle is big never mind the trailer.
I did try Aviva for a Range Rover quote tonight, they will insure daughter too, but at £2600 that's a hefty price to Pay!

If you can get a 4x4 that is a 'commercial' class (light van? I think it'll be on the log book) the insurance will be much cheaper. An example: £1500 to insure me (slightly older than your daughter, driving 6 years, clean license, no accidents) + OH on a standard 93 Discovery 200 tdi. £350 to insure me + OH on a 94 Discovery 200 tdi commercial (no back windows, only 2 seats).

I've no idea why, it's one of those weird things with insurance companies I suppose! There are other commercial 4x4 type-things available, I'm just most familiar with LRs, hence the example :).

The police told me that you shouldn't as if the trailer causes any damage ie becomes unhitched then it won't be insured!

You could always insure the trailer separately. Remember insurance companies work on risk. Ie they look at historical data, one of the biggest causes of the hike in insurance is injury lawyers and claims management companies, both of whom are interested in inflating the costs of an accident as high as possible. However third party insurance is now not much cheaper than fully comp as this biggest source of cost to the insurance companies is third party claims.

My understanding is that trailer insurance only covers your own trailer... although this is just from me fumbling about trying to work it out for myself... the insurance company said we couldn't tow with our Discovery on third party

I am 22 and tow with a Ford Ranger - its a pick up with a large back on it. Hate towing with it as so big but insurance cheaper as it is classed as a van. I am on my partners insurance he pays around £600 and to add me was an extra 60 I think? However, both his parents are insured on his car too as this made it much cheaper. Not sure if doing this would help reduce the cost of insurance for your daughter?

I have just called NFU for a quote.
For my R Reg Discovery that I was shocked to be told would cost £850 to insure with min miles. They have quoted me £2500!!!

The man was very nice and told me that NFU are trying to focus on areas and because where I live isn't a focus due to poor representation from NFU they are trying to price us out as they basically don't want the business!! his words not mine! Good to know as we have two properties insured with them.....(scuttles of to compare house insurance)
