Ive been offered a 4yo to bring on once it has been backed - he stands at 16h/16.1 at the moment
I know all youngsters and any horse is potentially life threatening, but...
to those who have brought on warmbloods what are they like??

At the moment I have a tbxarab and an ISH both of whom are quite firey, strong willed and quick.

any advice would be fab... thanks :-)

Hi i work at a yard where they have dutch warmbloods they compete in showjumping bsja 1m20 +
They have very good temperments and are very sweet and cuddley. most are quiet to do though a couple, mostly the younger ones, get a bit frisky at times but nothing too bad. These horses are 16.3-18hh so a bit dauting when they are jogging with heads stuck right up in the air :P also they are stabled 24/7 which may explain some of the hyperness at times :P

ah thank you :-)
The ISH is 16.1 and an ex national showjumper; so gets really excited at times... and jogs around with his head in the air... there is no hope in hacking him without draw reins lol

he is quite chilled; but is a bit of a loon... he came with the mental issues; probably why he is a redwings horse lol

im going to see the horse in around a month when he comes back home from being broken. the lady wants to see him hunted; but i like to do things really slowly.. especially with big horses like that. so it is doubtful that he will be hunting this year!
in a perfect world:
id like to do around a month on pure flatwork and just quiet hacks, and then start to introduce some poles into the flatwork.. but just keep it simple, and continue with the hacking.. building it up to some nice canter work if i can etc
id like to take him to a couple of small dressage competitions to see what he does and how he copes

once he gets the hang of the poles and things ill start on some tiny little fences; but maintaining all the foundations i have got already and make sure hes nice and calm and doesnt get too excited about it all
obviously keeping up the dressage competitions, but take him for a few clear rounds and see how he goes before starting to jump him properly.

then once weve got him hacking out well and jumping, id like to take him to cross country schooling sessions and just have a little play, no pressure and he can jump what i feel hes ready to jump.

hopefully if i take it slowly and patiently he should be a nice calm, well rounded horse.. ready to go to small hunts/events once hes matured a bit; hate to see him ruined if i rushed him!!

then hopefully she can take over and have him for herself... unless she wants to move him to my yard and i keep him lol.

But having two and taking alevels is already a task, so i was hoping it would just be over the summer; but i can see it wont be!!

will have to see what my timetable is like in september though!

Dizzy dingbat is a DWB and she was four when I got her... :D

Opinionated, strong, wilful, argumentative, loving, will try her socks off once she knows what I want (and she's in the right mood lol), will give her last ounce of strength.

I love her :D. And, I didn't know she was a DWB when I bought her, just loved her quirkiness :D

obviously if i feel that just looking at him he is going to kill me then i wont get on lol.. i dont mind youngsterish tantrum throwing
just dont want something thats evil or dangerous from the word go!

cheeers :)

Of course every horse is different :), but Dizz has never tried to ditch me or to bob off with me :D. She will definately argue with me, but that's all (apart from the odd bit of front end up and her bum went up once - apparently impressively, but not enough to ditch me :)).

Have fun! And let us know how you get on :D

yes i appreciate that, which is why im taking my time to find out about the horse first; as i know wb can have a reputation sometimes.... but then i do have a chestnut mare thats a tbxarab... i know she is only 14.2 but the things she throws at me; you have to ride her as though she is 4 - when she is 19!!!
