How many have gone on to be top level event horses?
I know a few people that won't compete their young horses in YEH classes as they say its too much to soon and they would wear out to quick.

The likes of Angela Tucker (Irish Jester) and Pippa Funnell (Primmores Pride, Midnight Magic, Jurassic Rising)always do well at these classes and go on up to 4 star level.
Tina Cooks horse Miners Frolic is doing well after winning the 5 year old BYEH class.

TBH the amount of work we did in the BYEH class yesterday is nothing more than a glorified combined training, it wasnt even a full dressage test and only 8 fences.

Its a shop window to see whats on offer, esp good for british breeding IMO. I thinks its very educational for young horses at £20 its great value for money.

Personally if a 5 year old cant cope with the demands of a 3 minute dressage test asking walk trot canter and a round of fences then its not going to withstand the demands of eventing.

Sorry I only just read your post. I was meaning the ones they do xc at as well. A friend took her 4 yr old to Hartpury last year to do the YEH, they did really well but now can't get round a PN.
I had heard that PP had done YEH classes when he was young but I didn't think there where that many that did.

Does anyone know anything about the FEHL system in Ireland? Read in the irish field yesterday that their banning young event horses from wearing hind boots or bandages - seems a bit over the top!

Slightly different then.
4 year olds at least have a maximum of only 4 event per year and have to be bought on day tickets.
However, when these events are run (mid summer) with the exception it seems this year, the ground can be quite hard.

I think the majority of ppl who compete horses as 4 year olds do it for the selling point of view. It really is a pro fest.

They has always been the 4 year old BYEH class, but PAVO 4 year old is relatively new so to know statistic of horses who have competed as 4 year olds in Pavo classes up to advanced isnt available yet.

PPL hunt there 4 year olds and find it very beneficial is this any less demanding than eventing?

I dont have a 4 year old so I dont know, I think if i had one capable of eventing i would give it a go as a fun point of view. However if it wasnt ready I would wait for its 5 year and contest BYEH classes instead.

I think it depends on how they are riden at the competitions/ home.. they need to be taken round in a way that it is more like schooling, it doesn't matter if they get time faults/ have a pole, or are not paying attention in their test. Its all a learning experience.

The thing is, with that in mind, I would much rather take a young horse to a hunt meet, and build its confidence in that way instead!

I think this is a good thing, and should be implemented in the BYEH classes here - it's already a rule in Style and Performance classes in pure sj'ing here as hind boots can be used to affect the hind-leg action so much.

I don't know if the BE young horse classes are going to end up the same way as the BSJA ones but in those you don't see 'normal' horses doing it. They are the best horses in the country and not the same 4/5 year olds that you wuold see jumping a BN. A completley different league of horse and maybe in a few years you'll get the same distinction in BE
