Young Ex Racers

I have just taken on a 3 yo tb who used to race. I have had expirience with ex racers before so am quite happy on that front but have never had a horse so young of my own(have helped to back and break friends youngsters before) . Obviously he is going have seen a bit more of life than a normal 3 yo but would you expect any more of him ridden wise ? My aim for the 6 months I have him is to have him hacking out alone and with company and to be able to walk,trot and canter in the school. He is naturally quite balanced (as demonstrated earlier by his wall of death impression round our school ) and very short and compact but is still slightly bum high. Am I expecting too much or not enough?

That sounds fine to me. I just got a 3 yo filly that's been in training, now just chilling out, and needs to put weight on. Hoping to a little hacking and some basic schooling later on in the year then winter off. Not making any fixed plans as things have a habit of going badly wrong! I have an older ex-racehorse currently broken and resting so just taking things day to day.
