Hey, I know this isn't technically horsey related but has anyone here joined or is in young farmers? I'm going to a new members evening tommorow and just want to see everyone's experiences. Thanks 😊

You mean the dances that last until 3.00 a.m.? That was a couple of weeks ago in our front field and I was waiting to go to bed without the pounding disco. Years ago I can remember my then teenage daughter speaking on the phone to her friend talking about YFC and saying how nice it was to go out all dressed up in a long dress. They all scrub up quite well.

Young Farmers is what you make of it. There are masses of opportunities to take part in lots of different things, via competitions, meetings and you can make friends and connections that last your whole lifetime. In fact although obviously there is an agricultural bias for many competitions (ploughing, hedge cutting, fencing, stock judging, including horses in our county, tractor handling) there is a staggering range of other things going on. Strictly Come Dancing, putting on plays and entertainment, some craft type things such as flower arranging, cooking, and useful things like After Dinner Speaking, quizzes, interviews. Even just running a meeting with Chairman, taking minutes, etc. is something that not many people get to learn unless they go to secretarial college.

Your first reaction is probably "I couldn't do any of that" but actually you find that in many cases you find yourself doing it. As they say, Yong Farmers work hard and play hard, but there is a structure and there are lots of useful things that you get out of it.

Do it!

I loved YFC. I was a late starter at 21 but I have done all sort, been to loads of great places and had amazing experiences that I wouldn't have had if I had not have screwed up the courage to join.

I have never met an unfriendly club, even when we were competing against each other, everyone was supportive. I have met life long friends (including my husband) and really wish I was still young enough!

Only experience was years ago when I was young.............and a farmer!! Well, family were the farmers :)

Go for it!! From what I remember it was fabulous fun. We used to meet in Dungworth Village Hall. Now there's a village name to conjure with. Lots of people in wellies and jodhpurs but there were lots of boys too!

Hmmmm, I'm starting to think someone should start an 'old' farmers club. I'd have a crack at that :p
