For those of you who back youngsters what bits do you use? Backing young horses at work and have to use those mouthing bits with keys on a ring and cheeks. Have not always used these as first choice before and feel that the huge amount of metal work is making them unsure about having bridle put on but they do seem to mouth well and have very wet mouths when working.

My personal preference has always been to start with some kind of warm metal lozenge bit with cheeks and work from there although in reality tend to use whatever boss has given me!

Always like to question and improve my methods and experience so what do you think?

some like happy mouth types, others i've backed have copper or sweet iron lozenge types..depends on how much room the said horse/pony has, as to what i try in it's mouth.

i started mine in a KK ultra - lovely loose ring with a lozenge. She goes like a dream in it. Will start Willow the same.
Dont think id want to use bits with keys
