Young Horse - BSJA Query

Well she's not that young, she has just turned 6 this month. I was going to event her towards the end of the season and still might but she is just so full of it - we would be luck y to stay in the dressage arena let alone complete a test - so I was going to concentrate on showjumping/huntertrials while we sort out the stressage at home. My query is this - she schools 1.10 happily at home and you dont notice it and she is mega brave, we have done some unnafiliated 2'9"-3ft stuff just to get her to experience different courses/venues etc no probs so how quickly would you move a mega brave young horse up the heights in BSJA? Should I test her a bit or get some consistantsy in results because she really relishes more testing combinations but I dont want to over face her .. When is it the right time to jump them in bigger classes ?

I would start at BN and move up, totally depends on the horse how quickly. BSJA is a bit different to unaffliated in the terms of the courses.

Take her to a few shows and see how she copes. At 6 she is old enough to cope mentally with moving on a little quicker, but i'd still want to jump a couple of BN's first to get her confidence up. Don't forget if you are jumping 1.10m at home, that effectively means you wouldn't want to compete above Discovery (as the JO will be 1.10m) yet. Also, a single 1.10m at home built with a couple of poles and a groundline isn't gonna look the same as a solid filler filled course in a small arena

I find its generally pretty obvious when you need to step up a class, you can feel the horse being more confident. And they jump alot of double clears!

Chose a big arena & ask who the course builder will be.

Would think that with a new venue and new fences to cope with, 90cms will be enough to start with.

If you find somewhere that does clear round to start with you know that you can complete the course rather than the risk of being eliminated / bad experience - or begin by hiring the course after a show
