Well... I tried several of the tricks you all suggested (thanks again) and we did managed to get 3 out of 5 correct strike offs (better than the usualy 2 out of about 10!!)... horah!

Progress!!!

So I lunged yesterday and he did one correctly and then 3 incorrectly, but on the third one, did a flying change before even I had a chance to bring him back to trot... so I let him canter a couple of circles, then back to trot for a few and then again asked for canter.... 2 incorrect and on the 3rd, incorrect, but changed......

Well... at least I know he can do flying changes!!!!!! Bless him, he's trying his best!!! and I am feeling a bit more positive now too thanks to your suggestions... fingers crossed we will have even more success schooling tonight!

He's having a check up with the back man tomorrow just incase tho....

Well done! I find when I'm lungeing, if my horse takes the wrong strike off and keeps doing it, trotting him over some poles can 'take his mind off it' and rebalance him for the next time I ask. Sounds like you're getting plenty of improvement though - good luck

put a small 1 wing (wing by sandschool fence leaving other end open if that makes sense!)) cross jump up right in one of the corners you should get the correct lead when he lands and gently send him forward that might work, it does ridden.

The back man said he was a little wonky (but miles better than last time he saw him!).... so that was probably not helping!

I have been trying to avoid using poles to correct his canter strike offs cos he has not done much pole work (his previous owner didnt like jumping, so he had no confidence when I got him)...

He is much more confident now (has gone from refusing to step over a pole on the floor to happily doing walk and trot poles and tiny jumps!!), but because his pole work is not that well established, I dont want him to associate poles with cantering at this early stage... he finds it challenging enough to coordinate his legs over poles in walk and trot, so we are taking things slowly!!

Good ideas though - I will try that when he is further down the line with his pole work if his strike offs are still bad.. hoping thatv having his back straightened out might have helped though...
