Okay, so I'm new, but I've done a reasonably thorough search to see if anyone had posted this before, and couldn't find anything relevant.

I have a 5yo ISH (3/4 Irish Draught) who is a dream to ride. However, he chews. Everything.

He is out in the field from 8am til about 4pm daily. Since our grass cover is wearing thin, they are hayed as well. He'll quite often ignore the grass and hay, and come over and chew the fence/gate. He has access to other wood in the field, as part of is wooded, but he doesn't seem interested in that!

When he comes in, he is groomed, and they are fed at about 5 (unless I'm still working him, in which case he's fed as soon as we're done). He gets Alfa-A with a quality feed balancer, plus about half a scoop of horse and pony nuts in a treat ball to try to keep him occupied. He also has a Jolly ball which he pretty much ignores (though he'll happily throw his water bucket around instead), a Likit with boredom breaker attachment, and free access to a salt lick which he uses.

At approximately 7pm they are given their hay ration. He has 26 pounds according to our (ancient) scales. He has it in a hay bar as I don't like the idea of haynets which put his head at an unnatural angle, and he has a tendency towards eating them anyway. He doesn't always finish his ration.

He eats his stable. I've covered everything in cribox, so he went for the CEILING JOIST!

I do know he's young and his teeth are moving again, but even when they're not, he's incredibly chewy. He has his teeth checked every 6 months at the moment as he's so young, by a proper equine dentist. He commented last time that there were a few little niggles associated with teeth moving, but nothing superbly out of sorts that would explain such incredible chewing.

I'm running out of ideas! I need to stop him chewing, or I'm going to end up very unpopular with my livery yard owner-who is also a good friend! Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi,

Go to: www.justbespoke.com

Have a look under Equine Formulations at Hydrobase....

I use this company every time I get a horsey problem and they have a solution.....I had the wood chewing thing, I called Roger and he said it could be a lacking in potassium, my horse stopped wood chewing when it went onto Hydrobase..

V.professional, intelligent man! Have a chat with him..

George :-)

My ISH is 8 yo and also chews everything apart from wood. Lead ropes, grooming kit, hosepipe, rubber gloves, coat toggles, broom handle, she even takes the hat off my head .. nothing is safe when within reach of her.

I wonder if she will ever grow out of it or she will forever be a "mouthy" horse.

Do you supply him with a mineral block? Wood chewing can be an indicator of nutritional imbalance. But also teething.

You say he gets his hay at 7.00pm - what does he have in front of him between comming in and then?

The lickitt is worse than useless - bin it.

creosote or the alternative does work, but beware the horses do get covered in it as well and it does blister.

As I said, he gets his dinner at 5, which takes him about 30-40 minutes to eat thanks to the feed ball thing.

He has a salt lick, and the feed balancer, so I thought he wouldn't need more minerals, but I'll do just about anything at this stage, so I'll look out for a mineral block...is there one you'd recommend? :)

Thanks for the advice, looking into that now :)

Ack! Don't tell me that! :D Mind you, if he stops the wood-chewing, the rest could be managed...

Yes, he does chew lead ropes as well, I'd forgotten that, I've got so used to handling it (cover the bit closest to him in NAF Crib Stop, let dry before you use it though!)!

I had a yearling who did this...she chewed through the post and rail fencing at one yard. I was told to get off!
Cribox, anti-chew sprays, creosate, non of them worked with her, she would lick and chew all the areas sprayed or painted. I was told to try mustard...didn't work. She had access to plenty of grass, hay, salt lick, mineral lick - none of these made a difference. In the end I had to attach electric tape round every last bit of the post and rail fencing to deter her. Took me days! She lived out so I don't know what she would have been like in a stable. But I really do feel for you. I went through hell and back about this, getting plenty of abuse from the yard owner!

I'd personally replace the salt lick with something like a Rockies mineral block. Get his teeth checked out and also make sure he has hay in front of him at all times. Ball things are ok for entertainment (although I'm not a fan) - but horses just want to eat, so not great for supplying their hard feed (so much is lost on the floor anyway). So personally, given his history I'd bucket feed him, and supply adlib hay.
