We have 2 horses at home, mine and my dads, Wes (my horse) is only 5 and only been hunting a few times.

When we go hunting and he’s in front he’s brilliant, however if my dad and his horse are in front or we are separated he goes crazy.

Wes is so big 17 hands and I’m small 5.3, he’s vv hard to control when dads ahead. I’m not sure how I can overcome this?? We try to separate at home by taking one on a hack and leaving one behind etc but it doesn’t seem to help out hunting. Any tips??

I understand you probably love your horse to death as we all do but being only 5'3 do you really need such a big horse. I'm 5'7 and just over 11 stone and I have a 15hh show cob who thinks he's a mad TB. He hunts all day and jumps any height you ask him to, he's quite enough for me.

On another note, what bit do you hunt him in, maybe you could put something in his mouth that will keep him in check which in turn will give you more confidence, it worked for me a few years ago when I had a big horse that was clingy out hunting.

Good luck.

I wouldn't worry at this stage. He's still very young and if you keep hunting you will find that he becomes more relaxed. If you reassure him when he is even a few yards from his friend, he will gradually get used to it. You'll find that next year he will be a different horse.

I'm with Harkaway, my youngster was a nightmare and I was stuck all day with the first horse she saw at the meet! As she got more confident about the whole thing she doesn't worry, and now I can even give people lifts in the trailer and leave them at the other end.

Edited to add though I don't know if she'd cope being seperated from her stavle mate, will find out when my son starts hunting next year, but as hes only 7 it may be a good thing!
