just before my five year old was ridden this evening, i had a feel down his legs and thought one was a little puffy at the top between the tendon and cannon bone. He wasn't lame and there was no pain or heat- you couldn't see the swelling so we did some walk, trot and lateral work with him, nothing too strenuous. He was very good and i checked his legs again after some walking and i thought the swelling had gone. just fed him and it seems puffier than before he was ridden, still no pain or heat but i am a little intrigued. He was backed this summer and we ride him in a sand area in the field. it's fairly level but does have a very minor slope. he gets lunged too and we lunged twice quite hard last week (as he was being very naughty) and was hacked out twice on roads over the weekend (about 1.5-2miles each day) predominantly walk on both days. any ideas? should he have a few days over althought it seems to cause him no pain and improves when ridden? any ideas why it could be? He is quite close in front but there's no sign he has struck himself. Also, he lives out 24/7.

If its around the tendon area ....... and if it were me and I wanted to be 100% sure everything was ok and because its a young horse then I would ask the vets opinion, possibly ask for a scan/x-ray to rule anything suspicous out, and to put my mind at rest .

I am not by any means saying its anything serious, My 3 year old decided to kick the wall, I didn't see this happen, but took her out to long rein her and noticed a swelling that seemed to appear out of nowwhere, She wasn't lame and in no pain, Vet scanned the leg and it was a blood clot .
9 weeks later and shes back to her normal self .

Just ask your vet for their opinion, just to put your mind at ease

his actual tendon seems fine, it seemed to go down a little over night, it's not warm and he's not lame...do legs go through changes when horses start to work properly? This 5 yo was backed this year and is now doing proper work- lunging, slow roadwork, etc.? He was lunged twice last week and was very, very lively...

actually, i should have been more precise, it is a slight puffiness around the inside vein on his leg...hardly noticeable now and causes him no pain at all...has anyone had this with their horse?
