I took Rosie to the local bloodhound training meet this week and it was awesome!

It was on a farm 15 mins walk from our yard so a couple of us hacked there.

She really loved it! She was so well behaved standing around waiting at the beginning, and walking/trotting to the first fields. She found a really nice canter stride on the straight bits that she hasn't managed before, and we did our first galloping. I did steer her around all the jumps as we haven't jumped before and I didn't want her first jump to be over anything solid, just in case it went wrong. But she so loved running with all the other horses :)

I will admit our brakes disappeared at times, but she wasn't trying to overtake everyone or go off anywhere silly, she was just excited, so I was happy to let her go and run with everyone, and didn't really want to pull her off balance when she was doing so well finding a nice stride with me on her back. We can work on that. She was nice and tired by the end, it's the longest and fastest outing she's done so far. But wasn't lame or sore the next day so all good.

We both had so much fun, and we'll definitely be doing more of this! I was wondering if more experienced people could give me some advice on where to go from here? How much should I do with her in her first year? Any tips on getting her jumping well? I'm very lucky to have very active bloodhounds and fox hounds locally so plenty of choice for outings :)

A bit of background - Rosie is a 4 1/2 years old 13.1 Welsh C. I bought her unbroken just over a month ago and she has taken everything we've done in her stride, including this. I bought her to do a 'bit of everything' with the odd hunt ride thrown in, but I'd forgotten how fun hunting was (haven't been since I was 14!) and now I want to do a lot of hunting :D Her fitness isn't amazing yet, but she's young, strong and healthy so it's improving quickly.

I'm not an experienced hunter so not really placed to say but my boy is a year older and I'm planning on just doing a few autumn meets and then 7 outings in the full season. I could do more but I am likely to want to do other things with him too so it's more my choice, and to see how he goes, rather than having a long term plan of making him a hunter. That said I may forget all that when we get on the hunt field, and take him a bit more often.
