Hi Y'all,

I have a 5yr old cob gelding and i have just moved to a yard with and indoor and outdoor menage, I was previously in a field so had no real schooling facilities.

My question is where do i start!! He is forward going and bright - picks thinks up very quick - but he is unbalanced and green going. He has hacked out lovely all last year, but i would really love to do dressage with him - i know not an ideal build but hes what ive got and i love him!! I have bought a passoa and im planning to start him on that for 10 mins 3 times a week before i ride him but any tips hints or exercises would be greatly received!

Lots of transitions up and down all paces and keep him thinking forward encourage him to work long and low in his head carriage and do lots of bending work. Make sure you can flex his neck both ways in all paces, this will take a while but is something to work on.

In walk start on a 20m circle and practice spiraling him in and out from your legs down to about 10m to start with. Then do the same in trot.

You could practice turn on the forehand and quarter turns. If you walk on the quarter line and then halt and turn his quarters out then walk again then halt and turn his quarters out so that you are walking in a square. Once you have mastered this you should be able to do it without the halt.

Hope that is some help!!!!

I would get intouch with a good instructor to help you now that you have an arena, they will be able to see your faults from the ground and will know where you should start from

Poles and transitions are where I would start with a baby though, encouraging forewards with the head lower (Although not on the bit until he is more balanced, more like long and low)

I would love an instructor but i have to be a bit careful with money to start with - the new yard is more expensive

Thanks both
