I always back my own, often reccomended to do some for other people too. I love it, if I could ever find a yard to base at reasonably locally I'd love to run a breaking /producing yard as fewer and fewer people seem to do it properly these days. You just get so much enjoyment from seeing them grow up.
I'm in the middle of the 'riding away' now he's been lovely so far (touch wood!!) and as the first youngster of my own that I'm starting, I couldn't have wished for a better natured chap. I'll keep at it, we're walking and trotting with brakes and steering so far and if I start to struggle or hit a stumbling block I won't be too proud to ask for help or send him away if needs must. He's for keeps, so there's no rush and I want it doing well as I've got high hopes for him so I'm playing it by ear
I have always done it myself but considering sending daughters pony away when the time comes as I'm 5ft7 and she is a section A . I will have done the ground work myself and prob put my daughter on her but would want a v small adult to do a bit of schooling.
My first horse I started backing, got into a pickle when he took to rodeo style broncing me off, so sent him away to be backed properly and learnt a lot.
My second I backed completely myself and ridden away and had so much fun and a great feeling of achievement plus I could go at my own and the horses pace instead of rushing it.
Now just got my 3rd and starting the groundwork process ready to back her next year when she is 4.
I absolutely love backing and training young horses! Give me a unbroken youngster any day instead of a push button ride!
I am just in the process of doing the groundwork and will hopefully be sitting on my youngster some time in the next couple of weeks. This is the first horse I've trained myself from scratch and am taking things very slowly and trying to make sure I don't forget anything important.
Part of the reason for me doing all of the training myself is that all of the local so called professionals are just way too harsh and from stories I've heard there is no way I could send my boy there.
If I get stuck there is one place I would send him but it is a last resort as it is not close enough for me to keep as much of a watchful eye as I would like.
We have had some issues to overcome and there are things I would do differently next time around but no major problems so far and I have absolutely loved the whole process.
Here's hoping that when I do get on he won't chuck me off again but I think my prep is thorough enough and he is a generally calm and quiet type
I had my 10th ride on my youngster this evening - I bought him as a foal and have done everything myself. I contemplated sending him away last year for backing but decided to just hang fire and do it myself and I haven't regretted that decision for a second - he's fabulous and I'm really pleased with how quickly he's picking everything up.
