Put my youngster in his stable this evening and he had a good drink of water, but as he was gulping it down I noticed a trickle of it coming out of both of his nostrils.

He has access to water 24/7 and I've never noticed it before. Has anyone else had the same experience with their horse? Something to worry about?

He's eating fine, ate his dinner with no problems after drinking the water and then went on to eat his hay.

I'm going to keep a close eye on him, and try to see if it happens again when he has a drink..

Any help or ideas of what it could be would be great!

Alex.

Are you sure it was actually running out of his nose from what he had swallowed or was it just because he had stuck his nose deep in the bucket and it was surface water just running back out of his nostrils.

If it isn't then he may have a soft pallette problem. How old is he as usually this is noticed as foals. Can often result in lung problems as food is aspirated into the lungs. Have you noticed him coughing or having a snotty nose?

If you are at all unsure then have the vet look at him.

Thanks for your reply Evelyn. It was 100% water dripping out of his nose, he's very careful not to get his nose wet when he drinks and I was watching him lol. It was a very light trickle running down then dripping off, which then stopped as soon as he'd finished. He's 3 years old and I've have him a year, never had any coughing problems or a snotty nose at all.. Never seen him do this before! I shall have a look in to soft pallettes in horses and see what I can find. Thanks again!

Trust me Fany, it wasn't a runny nose! I was fussing him just before he had a drink and it was completely dry. It was a constant trickle of clear water running from both nostrils as he was drinking which was dripping back in to the bucket, when he stopped drinking he lifted his head, it carried on dripping for a few seconds then stopped. Will watch him tomorrow, may try and encourage him to drink something with a bit of apple juice in and see if it happens again. Thank you for your suggestion though :D

My shire has a hole in his pallett, this causes him to cough up chewed grass sometimes, it has'nt affected him overly he is 23/24 now.

Have returned your pm. My horse is fine now after a 2 week course of steroids and analgesia.

same problem caused by, according to the Vet, trauma due to an injection in his neck that hit a nerve.

Can also be due to trauma or a soft palette problem so best to get the Vet to have a look.
