My two year old jumped out of her field today into the neighbouring field. The fence is D Rail fence height which is electricified bull wire. Unfortunately the gate of the field that she jumped into was open and she got out onto the road.

My sister got someone at the door to tell her that a horse got out and that a car nearly crashed into her. My sister went to the field and there was about 6 cars sitting stationary with little lady in among them. My sister caught her and thankfully there wasn't a mark on her. I would be devastated if anything happened to her.

My sis rang me to tell me and I feel so helpless as I have got a broken arm. She is currently in the stable as we don't want her jumping out again.

She has never jumped out of the field before and I don't know
Has anyone extended their fences before and how did they do this? Our fence is wooden posts with bull wire.
Do you think if I put a electric fence in front of the bull wire would this prevent her jumping out?

I just can't risk her getting out again.

Any ideas???

It might work having an inner electric wire running around, but make sure she can see it so use a tape or tie something along it at intervals. Is she with other horses? If not perhaps you can find her some company. Hope you can get it sorted because its not a good feeling knowing your baby's not secure.

Be careful she doesn't try to jump the electric fence and bull wire together, seen this happen and the poor horse was a mess. Cant you extend the fence height with electric fencing? I used to loan a pony years ago and unless the fence was 5ft one horse would end up 3 fields away by tea time x

Can you get deer fencing posts for electric tape - I had to do this for a youngster who kept jumping out. Secure them to existing fence posts the run electric tape through all the hooks above the existing fence. For a more permanent solution you could do as below - refering to section above post & rail

Carlos mum, She was in with my other three horses including her beloved companion pony.

Flying solo - That is one of the things that concerns me about putting a electric fence in front of the bull wire fence.

Evelyn - Do you know where I could get this type fencing?

Many thanks

I had this problem a few years ago with a small yearling clearing the high hung five bar gate leaving her friends and ending up on the lane. Like you I was so worried it would happen again. I bought the extra tall electric fence posts and had that along the fence line then another line of regular posts about 2 metres in front of it so that she couldn't jump the whole lot or take it as a bounce! This helped but still found she was really bored and ended up starting ground work (not lunging but everyday things) earlier than planned and this helped more than anything.
Good luck!!

It is made from battons attached to the existing wooden posts with sheep netting fixed to it. Most of the studs use it here in New Zealand.

Quickest way is to get a load of electric fence posts & wide tape. (beg, borrow, tho dont steal!)
Bind 1 third of the height of the fence posts to the top of your existing fence with baler twine. (then 2/3rds of the post is rising above)
When tape is added, this ought to make it over 8 ft tall or thereabouts.
I'd advise 2 lines of tape if you can.

Then also make up an electric fence inside the paddock about 5 ft in from the main fance.

Had an escaper a number of yrs ago, this was the only way we could keep him in :(

Have got permanent additions to the fencing these days on the boundary (tho not needed now) which is 18" of post nailed onto the top of each fence post - with white tape attached in holders - fencing is over 6ft. Broken rails & fence posts are great to be sawn up & recycled for this.

Good luck - hope you sort it out

Thanks everyone for the ideas! Wee lady is currently in the stable and isn't too happy about it as we couldn't risk her jumping out again. Unfortunately it was dark before my dad and hubby came home.

We (well dad and hubby given my arm situation) are going to buy some electric tape and fence posts tomorrow morning to extend the fence as a temporary measure. We will then look at something a bit more permanent for the fence along the road.

If anyone has any other ideas please let me know.
