Hi, over the past couple of weeks I have noticed that my 3 year old looks tucked up, has lost all condition and has lost a lot of weight. He is on 2 buckets a day and hay in the morning and is rugged up but is turned out 24/7. He is not his usual self either as he is very quite (usually very in your face).

Any advise helpful.

Thanks :-)

Sorry I forgot to say on my post that tonight I had the vet out as he had very mild colic, the vet gave him some pain relief and I am checking every hour but I am still worried about the weight loss.

Hmm, if been going downhill for 2-3 weeks & now colicky, I would presume vet is also running blood tests for all sorts of possible problems? Like worm damage, anaemia and a number of other function tests for liver etc to rule things out?

When the vet came out it was very dark so was hard to see as as no light at all, so all she done was give him some pain relief and told us to call her if he got any worse, I am looking to move him ASAP as he is not coping with living out 24/7 with only natural shelter. I'm looking to get the vet back out on Monday for the above or sooner if he gets any worse with the colic.

My guess without seeing him would be worms possibly encysted redworm starting migrate. Has he been wormed for them it is vital to worm at least three times a year Autumn and summer for tape worm and winter for encysted redworm the rest can be either seen (Pinworm) or tested in worm counts neither encysted or tape are found in worm counts. So minimum chemical wormer would be tape (pyrental) and moxidectin in winter (equest) or 5 day panacur if you dont have resistance in your area.

Many people think that the worm counts pick up everything but they dont oh and wormers are better slightly overdosed than underdosed

I have had him since he was 6 months old and has been wormed on a regular basis. I don't know if his history may have anything to do with it but when he was a yearling he was diagnosed with multi allergies?

Do he only get hay in the morning? How long does it last him. If he's not eating pretty much 24/7, as he's meant to, he will become skinny, tucked up and miserable.

It is not inconceivable to still be worms I have seen a youngster fade dramatically from migrating redworm He was brought up on a top stud and wormed regularly. Dont think that the wormers are infallible

Agree with Kalibear just having hay in the morning is not enough, do you have plenty of grass?

Yes he is only being given hay in the mornings as the field he is currently in is shared and the owner will only feed hay in the mornings. I am currently looking for a livery yard to move him to as the field has hardly any grass but no luck as of yet.
