I came down this morning to find my youngster doing his best hamster impression! He is 30 months old and his bottom front incisors are just starting to look like shedding the baby caps but the swelling is at the back of his mouth on the lower right side. Is it likely to be due to teething or is injury more likely? He has eaten his breakfast but slowly and with his head tilted presumably to shift food to the other side. I am waiting on a call back from the dentist but will call the vet if it gets any worse. I'll try and attach a pic and I'd be grateful for any advice.

Have you puggled about to make sure it's not food compacted up there?
If not there can be many causes, access, teething or a wound are all possibles.
Yes, I had as good a feel as I could and it is definitely sore and not just a mass of food. He wouldn't let me do too much though so I didn't force the issue.

My boy had that and he had a tooth root infection.May be worth getting a vet to have a good look.
I've had vets miss tooth problems before so I always prefer the dentist to look first but I'll get the vet if the dentist can't get here any time soon.

My boys swelling literally came up overnight. He was going to the vets that day to be scoped for Ulcers so x rayed his jaw and saw it on there.Had oral antibiotics but swelling returned after 2 days of finishing them. Was admitted and put on intravenous antibiotics for 10 days-2 days after finishing them the swelling returned again. He came home nearly 3 weeks after being admitted minus a very large tooth

Yikes that sounds nasty! Fingers crossed it isn't that!

The swelling is the same tonight but he seems more comfortable eating so I will wait for the dentist to come on Wednesday. Obviously if he is any worse in the morning I will get the vet asap.

When my friend's had a swollen cheek it turned out he had got a bit of a thorn stuck in the cheek inside his mouth and it had caused an abscess. Got thorn taken out and some antibiotics and soon got better.

How did it go?
It turned out to be just a new tooth erupting, and this morning he had a second smaller swelling come up on the top of his jaw on the other side that the dentist said was a second one coming too! I've got some bute I can give him if he gets sore but he seems to be ok at the moment as the original swelling is starting to go down
