I have been recommended by my farrier that if i hack my big baby horse over summer it would be worth putting a full set of shoes on him. How many people shoe there 4yr olds?
I was thinking of having a set put on before we go to a riding camp in May, then maybe one or two more sets before slowing him down ready for his winter off?
He has fantastic feet but sadly wearing them down to fast with the bit of roadwork we are doing.

I have a rising 4 year old and am *trying* to keep him barefoot.....Has yours gone footsore, or can you just see that they are wearing down?

I have put fronts on my four year old. I don't intend putting hinds on her this year, even never if possible. There are a few stony bridleways round here and the hopping/flinching when treading on the stones is stopped with fronts.

He is wearing his backs down slightly uneven (farrier says its due to his bum still not being filled out completly yet and will imprve once muscles up)
Would much prefer to keep him barefoot if i could lol my others are but they are hardy welshies

If your horse is wearing his feet down and your planning on doing further road work then perhaps take your farriers advice and at least put fronts on?
I'm sure there are plenty of barefoot peeps on here that will give you advice on keeping them shoes off but i would be tempted to follow the expert and get some thing on his toes.
My lad was 4 when he had his first set of shoes and although he also had strong feet, hacking out on roads and stony ground etc was making him foot sore.

Putting shoes on meant i could ride, no shoes meant (for my horse anyway) no riding and maybe selfishly i wanted to ride!!!

i agree with this, many people have there horses shod arround this time as this seems to be the time that there work realy kicks up a gear. personaly i would listen to the expert and get shoes on, better that than being foot sore and uncomfortable. x

Thanks everyone.
Have booked him in to have his first set on in 5 weeks when he comes to do my other boys, so he will have them on before doing to much work.
