How important is it TO YOU to protect a newly backed baby's legs from splints/tenson injurys/wind-galls etc.
My youngster has been backed 3 weeks, we hack out 4 x and school 1 x i always use brushing boots all round, never trot on the roads and do a max of 30 mins in the school.
I will be using exercise bandages too for schooling as i feel they may offer a little more support but do worry about over-heating the legs whilst schooling.......

What do you do?

how old is your baby? mine is 3, hasnt been sat on yet, he's very lightly lunged/long reined and walked out on the road and round the villiage to see things ;) .. no session going over 20 minutes. he is always in overreach and brushing boots all round. I never canter him or trot on the roads.

I doubt il use anything more when he begins schooling

bandages won't give any more support than boots, so I wouldn't bother if that is the only reason you are swapping.

As long as you build up the work slowly you shouldn't have an issue (even with trotting on the road) and imo it is more damaging to horses to work on deep or holding ground rather than hard ground.
