Ahhhh just heard from people that the youngster I am going to see tonight is owned by a dealer – a dodgy dealer….I’m pulling out.

I don't want to buy "anything"

:(

If owner presented themselves as a private individual then yes, by all means pull out. But if they weren't hiding that they are a dealer then perhaps arrange to go when you can take someone else experienced with you? (Not that that isn't good at all times anyway...) I guess what I'm saying is the current owner doesn't much matter, (except with a view to finding out history and previous diet, workload, health etc, etc), the horse does.

Youngster as in unbacked or only just backed? If it were me I'd still go and see it, it's the older ones that I tend to avoid. There is usually (not in all cases, obviously) a reason why an older horse is going around dealers, but if it is young, unless it has a medical issue (which you would see in a vetting anyway), there is less chance of it being sold on for reasons that are not genuine?

Just a thought :)

She has presented herself as an individual. But my friend said she went to buy a youngster last yr from her and it was hopping around in a circle and the woman claimed it was fine. My friend said avoid.

If you like the youngster that much I would still go if I were you. Having bought from both a private owner and a dealer..I would prefer buying from the dealer again. I also noticed that the dealer's horses didn't bat an eyelid at the lorry coming in or out - which I find reassuring as I'm situated near heavy traffic.

If your instincts tell you to walk away, then do it. Young horses, broken or unbroken can be ruined if they have been handled badly, by private people and dealers. I have bought a young horse and she has so much baggage, it's unbelievable and I got her from the breeder.

Thing is,if you like the youngster go and see it and decide for yourself. There are good and bad everywhere.

I absolutely agree with this. Go and see for yourself there are good D (in case I get another FC on my case).

I am meeting many unscrupulous private sellers so I actually dont think you have anything to lose. My old boy was with Gypsys somewhere in his young days and they did a good job thats all I can say. Thats why he is so FAB on A roads!

Go with an open mind as seriously I know people that have had some great horses from D. And some that have been caught out.

I honestly cant see the difference..Good luck I know I am in the same boat as you!

My fiance just called her. He asked if she was a dealer and she said yes. Hmmm. She told me she was selling on behalf of a friend. Am I annoying you all yet?! :D:D

If she'd said yes she was a dealer that's one thing as you then have some comeback. However if she's "selling for a friend" then you have no comeback IIRC.

As she has lied already about being a dealer/ and the selling for a friend story, I don't think you can rely on what she tells you about the horse. I wouldn't go as once you've been to see it you might have more difficulty walking away especially if there is a 'sob' story attached or the horse is made out to be extra special - I'm always amazed at how much good stuff dealers know about a horse they've perhaps had for only a few weeks. Proceed with caution if you decide to take a look.
