I know someone is going to think I'm stupid buy will ask anyway. Thinking of going to a show next month. Will be putting my 4yo in M&M In Hand. There is a youngstock class I wanted to enter my youngest into. The rules state, no foals or yearlings. Mine is 15 months. I'm either trying to bend the rules because I want to take her, or going mad, but want someone to clear this up for me. Is she still classed as a yearling until her second birthday? Im sure there was something about horses being class as yearlings by the December of their birth year? Getting muddled here I think. Anyway, cutting it short, will it be an absolute no-no with her? Thanks, and apologies for my stupidity!

I have never come across a youngstock class saying no foals or yearlings! Around my way they accept 1, 2 ad 3 year olds. I *think* the rule used to go that a horse has it's birthday on 1st jan the year after it was born. i.e a foal born in june 2011 was "officially" a yearling 1st jan 2012.

Yes she'll be classed as a yearling until the last day of December in the year that she is 1, so from 1st Jan 2013 she'll be classed as 2. Strange no yearlings in the class though, as unless they have their own class, youngstock is normally 1-3 years.

Strange they dont allow yearlings - then again every show has its own rules!

Upto you if you bend the rules ;) I have once I entered a youngstock class with one of mine a while back he was actually 4 but only by a couple of weeks and seeing as I had just got him and it was his very first show I wanted him to go in a class that would be a little more forgiving for any lively behaviour.

Sorry not being much help!!

I have a 16 month yearling and so his in his first year. In January he will be in his 2nd year and althought technically he would not be 2 until April he is counted at a 2yo.

Most Youngstock classes are 1 to 3. I understand the foals because this years ones will only just be being weaned and they ask them to wait till Jan. But some shows have a Mare and foal class so that covers that.

I would maybe call the organisor and ask them to confirm and question why.

The smaller riding clubs in my area have different rules - one being no colts or stallions. I think its for the benefit of the children and members.
If your class for Youngstock was not a qualifier I wouldn't be to worried and enter him. If you think his going to be a good boy and you will have control.its not as if they are going to ask you to prove his age. But on the other hand he would not be as well developed as the 2 and 3 yo so you could lose points on the condition side.
Or just take him for the experience and don't actually do class.
