Have been to out first show today and my girl was fantastic. Though I absolutely cannot get along with the white rope halters. In the ring she had it off 3 times cos she kept putting her head down.
It rides up over her eyes when she runs. I just hate them. It was most definitely Italy fitted correctly. Can you tell me what alternatives I have? (links if poss).
She isn't bitted as only 11months old and I won't be bitting til shes 2. X

Is she a native? Do they have to wear white or would a leather filly slip be OK?

Sounds to me that you have put the halter on upside down, the riding up is classic symptom of that. I use them all the time both in the sow ring and at home when moving horses. Make sure that when you put it on the lead goes under the chin, not over the nose. When I started showing in halters i had it on upside down and all the time the knot pulled into the horse's eye. If I have not made myself clear next time you are at a show ask somebody they are sure to put you right.

I thought I had put it on right. She just kept putting her head down to eat and up into her eyes it went as pulled her up and over her head it slipped if she got a good enough angle (bad manners I know but first time out and fully taking advantage)... I will post a picture...

Yes you do have it on correctly but personally I agree with Faracat and think that the Filly slip would be perfectly acceptable.
As for putting rope halters on the wrong way, it is a very easy mistake and have made that error before myself - and been ridiculed for it !! TBH never got on with it, even when I got it right !

Thankyou. Will look now. Do you know if I will be marked down for using a a filly slip on an 11mo?

check the rules for your individual breed - you may find that even when it's convention for a white halter to be used that filly-slips and the like are still permitted (this is true for Welsh don't know if its the same for other breeds). As yours is part-bred then it's even more likely that it would be allowed.

Whether you are marked down depends very much on the individual judge - some do, some don't. If the pony goes better in a slip then personally I'd take the chance as you'll make up any lost marks with a good show.

Looks a bit small to me, although correctly fitted, I'd prefer it to be lower on her face where a cavesson noseband would sit. Yours looks to be up, almost on her jaw.

L & B - you have the halter on correctly but you should tie an overhand knot at the point where the rope comes through the loop, this stops the noseband coming loose. I adapted an inhand bridle for my unbitted yearling and he got it off his nose and went for a hoon - with me running fast alongside with it around his neck! Not fun!

The filly slip is lovely and designed specifically for good control with no bit. Pressure on the lead puts pressure on the nose and poll.

She'll look very smart in one.

It's high up cos it kept riding up as I say and is the whole point of this thread!

Thanks for the advice :)
Lol at you and your boy! That wasn't far from happening to me last weekend! The fact that she was so interested in the grass is what saved us else she'd have been off with it over her ears. Naughty girly! Lol.

Aww Thankyou. I think she would look smart in a filly slip too. Just didn't want to be judged down if they presumed I couldn't handle her as she's mostly a good girl, just lacks showing manners and LOVES it when someone's laid a buffet of grass on in a show ring... All for her! Haha.
