further to my request for help with an article on winter survival tips now the editor has asked for a piece on money saving ideas. I have patiently explained that if I had lots of these my current relationship with both the bank and 3 credit card companies would be on a rather better footing!!!! I also told said man (of course) that personally my best idea was to sell some of my 2 yr old geldings but there are no customers anywhere to be seen!

Please post your best winter money saving ideas here - all gratefully received ......

buy in bulk when you can

remember cheaper is not always the most cost effective. I now buy Hunter shavings as they are the best and use far less!!

don't have shoes on unless your horse does need them

I use a vit and mineral supplement far cheaper than a balancer and my horse never looked so good

invest in rubber matting if you can, saves time and money

Save on time and fuel share turn out or bring in with other liveries

prepare meal before you leave the house, saves on take aways when you are shattered and don't want to cook :D

Hi if you don't mind me asking what vit supplement do you use?

Money saving tips- sell the buggers!:D

I've found deep litter shavings cheaper than the straw they were eating, buying my shavings in bulk and also seeing if paying for turn out or bring in is cheaper than an extra trip down to the farm.

"Money saving tips- sell the buggers!"

After over 40 years of horse ownership I've just sold everything, and am not in a position to have another horse.

It's like a tap has been turned off at the bottom of my bank account!!!!!

However, I miss the whole horse thing dreadfully and am already on the lookout for something to ride!

Try to keep your horse on a yard that has good winter turnout that isn't over grazed, I spent a fortune on hay last winter as the yard I was on had rubbish turnout. I was basically using twice as much as I will be this winter as he will be able to go out everyday, rather than me having to keep him in and pay for an extra hay net!

I would agree - don't have horses in the first place, but of course thats not going to happen.

Feed good quality haylage in plentiful quantity - it'll save you a fortune on hard feed, and your horses will look better. I feed 9 through the winter and I barely spend £100 a month on hard feed. This includes youngsters, TB's abd aged horses.

Turn out every day, it will reduce your bedding bills if they are not churning around inside.

Use mutli purpose rugs, no need to spend on turnouts and stable rugs, plus you'll save time too not changing them.

Have shared lessons rather than private. You can still get as much out of it, but it won't cost so much. Or join a Riding Club/Training Club and take advantage of the lessons they offer.
