Sailor is the one that dropped dead in the ring when the mud was really heavy. I remember crying the first time I read it, I didn't really like the horse that much though
I picked Shadowfax, been trying to teach my Arab to come running when I whistle but it just isn't working
Interesting suggestion but the feature was specifically about fictional horses in literature, and obviously Seabiscuit was a real horse, even if the film about his achievements may have tended towards fiction at times.
I went for Shadowfax. I loved the way Tolkien portrayed him in his books and I just had the most amazing images of what the horse would be like. FWIW I loved the horse that played him in the films, he was stunning.
I was also torn between BB - although I loved Merrylegs and Ginger! The Pie and Thowra. The Silver Brumby stories were just awesome.
Of those listed, The Maltese Cat. I love that story and it reduces me to tears every time.
Otherwise: Thowra, Shantih, The Black Stallion, and especially the lovely dun event horse in a book i read as a child (i thought it was called The Perfect Horse, could be wrong though). The horse in International Velvet (is he coloured? can't recall) is right up there too.
The dun in The Perfect Horse was called Minos. I liked Rosina Copper from 'Rosina Copper' by Kitty Barnes.
Also the Impossible Horse, but I can't remember his name.....was he Benedictine?
It has to be Black Beauty. This story is so well written especially considering the period it was written in.
Itso highlights how I imagine horses react and their emotions to how they are treated and how "fashions" (e.g. in this case the bearing reins) can affect horses.
Black Beauty "tells" the story so well. Wish it was a real horse and was mine!
