The biggest problem that I have seen time and again, is people overhorsing themselves and then having their confidence take a big knock because of it. All but one ended up selling their horse and then buying something that suited them better. The one that kept the horse, had lots of lessons and really dedicated herself to becoming a better rider so that she could cope with the horse.
The big mistake that I made when I first bought CM (after a few horse free years due to health problems) was with the choice of yard. I had her on part livery and it didn't work out. I moved her to DIY ASAP and both of us were much happier.

Buying something that is scared of poles. Jumps rustic jumps and XC style jumps like a stag but won't even walk over a pole... So SJ is a long way off.
Apparently he has done showjumping and I have photos from his old home of him jumping coloured fences so not sure what happened.
I didn't mind green but ideally wanted something that would do everything. He's such a nice person and tries so hard at everything else that I am determined to get there with him! Even if it takes years!

my first mistake was not googling the dealer i went to for my first horse.
My second was going to the dealer on my own after having nothing to do with horses for 30 years.
My third was buying the horse that looking back he wanted me to buy, who was extremely calm and placid.
After that there was just too many mistakes to list but on the plus side after a very bad start the horse did eventually calm down and has been my dream come true now for 8 years.
Yesterday i bought another one, his field mate of four years and i have known her for all of her life. We have backed her ourselves after many months work and im hoping she will be my horse for many years to come...two entirely different experiences, the first one wrong in so many ways with a brilliant outcome and the second on we hope just as happy!

Wasn't look but planned to the next year for a been there done that to look after me as id been out of the saddle for about 15 years other than the occasional hacks on holidays etc couple week later I owned a 18 month old well handled Appy as my first horse.
He starts big boy school this weekend and I am so excited for him to start learning and us doing things together, its going to be hard and probably some tears but I plan on putting my blood sweat and tears into him with the help of 2 very experienced people so it will be worth it in the end

LOL! Hope you have had/are having mostly good times with the ex-racer, {not a lot of bolting/rearing/napping/buck with a fart, spooking etc}.
