For a big hairy Shire x haflinger 15.2, always wintered out without a rug - having his first clip (trace)

I'd go for a higher denier rug myself. We made the mistake of buying one of these and it lasted three days. My horses aren't rug trashers, I was waiting for a FAL rug to arrive and was desperate so got this in the interim. Never again.

Have heard of lots of other people having problems with these rugs tearing very easily too, because they are only 600 denier. Wish I'd have known about that first!

A lot of Masta's I have known seem to slip to one side, but not sure if this is coincidence. Also seem quite heavy. Would recommend either Weatherbeeta or Horseware at about the same price.

Agree with ISH - a higher denier would be better. I would guess he will be warm enough if he usually winters out without a rug. The fit of those rugs and the weatherbeeta's usually come up good for the chunkier horse. Amigo's on the other hand come up small and the belly straps are quite short.

Personally I would'nt touch a Masta. I don't find the fit at all good. Buy the best you can afford and if that stretches to a Horseware ( any type as I find them all excellent especially the 1200 d Amigos's which are very well priced) A weatherbeeta or a Fal.

I LOVE MASTA rugs personally!!! they are great!!! Very water proof, I have the heavy weight turnout with full neck and it's brilliant!!! Never slips never comes undone!!!

Great rug, they offer great warmth and coverage wraps right round my boys keeps him all snuggly!!!

Would defo recommend them!!!

xx

Hate mastas, find them useless in terms of fit and waterproofness

your boy is similarish build to mine. If you can afford to I would go rambo/rhino (I manage rhino only!) with the v fitting neck which works on mines bigish shoulders. If not weatherbeeta or mark todd I know fit those types well.

As much as I loved Masta rugs in the past and still own several old ones, the 'Zing' range is their budget range and the quality is very reduced. My horse is not a rug-wrecker but ripped her Zing turnout in two places and the lining seems to be coming away from the inside. Also they've changed the pattern they're cut on; the old style fitted my cob like a glove but the new ones are baggy in all the wrong places.

I don't rate Weatherbeeta for chunky horses but Amigos are fine if you buy a size larger than normal.

They're excellent quality.

LOL im even more confused than before lol

i really like the idea of the half neck to avoid the wither pressure but i thin k hell be too hot in a full neck. So im definate on a few things

Medium weight (can add fleece rug if cold)
Half neck

I agree about the masta rugs really bad fit. i have the zing ones as well and just as bad. last rug i bought was by rec . from a friend. i bought it off ebay a make called AXION. really great full neck 1200d outer 300grm fill 2 tone blue. only thing that happened to it was one of the legs strap rings came off, but soon replaced with a bit of string, and i only paid £30.00 plus £10 p and p. so £40 for a rug and it has coped with all the rain and snow with no leaks.

Nice and deep, the neck will certainly rub his neck though which is ok if you are not showing/dressage.

If you are worried about the surcingles coming undone wrap a couple of plaiting bands around the metal 'T' of the surcingle where the vertical meets the horizontal (like the rubber donuts on the rambo rugs) and you will be okay. An example of a rubber donut for those of you who don't know is a photograph on the link below. you will see this one is see through plastic although a plaiting band or two will suffice.

for value for money, buy an AXIOM on ebay..they fit chunky types beautifully..and very waterproof..get a pretty high denier..mine are 1200.

failing that if you want the more expensive type, AMIGO.

Both the above makes fit a cob shoulder well

(I dont buy Mastas anymore as they just dont fit)

If you're looking for a cheap rug my horse's riff raff one is good too - fits her well, stayed waterproof and doesn't slip. The masta did fit well but it was an older one so if the shape has changed maybe they are a rubbish fit now.

My masta was really heavy and ripped really easily. It also came off the horse a couple of times.

My two preferred makes are Amigo and Premier Equine for my 15.2 cobster.

sorry another no to masta zing rugs - rubbed my connie x so bad in one night that she refused to walk in it. Fits my other horse OK but then I use a bossy bib with him and that stops most things rubbing. I guess like most things some rugs fit some horse better than others!

OP you like your mane right? (I forgot about your other post!)

if so

avoid half necks like the plague!!

standard or full not half
